Investigation of single-dose thoracic paravertebral analgesia for postoperative pain control after thoracoscopic lobectomy – a randomized controlled trial
Thoracoscopic lobectomy is less painful than normal thoracotomy, but pain management is still an issue in the postoperative period. Thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is considered as the gold standard for post-thoracotomy pain control, but is associated with numerous risks. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Comparison of mini-subvastus approach versus medial parapatellar approach in primary total knee arthroplasty: A meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials
Minimally invasive knee arthroplasty is rapidly gaining recognition with the aim of reducing the damage to the extensional mechanism of traditional medial parapatellar approach and achieving faster recovery of patients after surgery. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the efficacy and safety of mini-subvastus (MSV) and medial parapatellar (MMP) approach in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Alvarado or RIPASA score for diagnosis of acute appendicitis? A meta-analysis of randomized trials
The electronic diagnostic tools of acute appendicitis present serious disadvantages, thus some clinical scores have been formed in order to reach the diagnosis easily and safely. Alvarado and RIPASA scores are the most commonly used and the purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare the diagnostic accuracy of these two scoring systems. Steering the Wheel Towards the Standard of Care: Proposal of a Step-by-step Ultrasound-guided Emergency Chest Tube Drainage and Literature Review
Chest tube drainage is a common procedure performed by physicians in the emergency setting. Complications may arise in up to 25% of the cases. These vary from drain misplacement to lethal iatrogenic injuries. Ultrasound provides adequate visualization and correct identification of the insertion site, allows the exclusion of a vulnerable intercostal artery, and enables timely diagnosis of drain malpositioning. Although feasible, ultrasound-guided techniques are underused and seldom applied during chest drainage. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

The Implants used for Intramedullary Fixation of Distal Fibula Fractures: A Review of Literature
Ankle fractures are amongst the most common surgically treated musculoskeletal injuries. Intramedullary (IM) fixation of the lateral malleolus had been attempted as early as the 1990s. In recent years, dedicated implants have emerged. This review evaluates the design characteristics of the technology used to perform IM fixation of distal fibular fractures. Goal-directed fluid therapy versus conventional fluid therapy in colorectal surgery: A meta analysis of randomized controlled trials
This meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effects of goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) versus conventional fluid therapy (CFT) in colorectal surgery on patients' postoperative outcome and to detect whether the results differ between studies with the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol and those without, between studies using different devices for GDFT, or between different surgical approaches (laparoscopy or laparotomy). Reality check: Can transplanting more renal dialysis patients buy us an MRI scanner?
A surgeon claimed, “transplanting more renal dialysis patients could buy us an MRI scanner a year.” With transplants costing £42,025 per procedure, a high-end MRI scanner reaching in excess of £1million, we decided to investigate for ourselves. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Can the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio be beneficial in predicting lymph node metastasis and promising prognostic markers of gastric cancer patients? Tumor maker retrospective study
Inflammation can promote tumor growth, invasion, angiogenesis and even metastasis. Inflammatory markers have prognostic value in some malignancies. The aim of the present study was to examine whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) served as sensitive serum markers for predicting lymph node metastasis and prognostic factors in gastric cancer (GC) patients.
