High ligation of theanal fistula tract bylateral approach: A prospective cohort study on a modification of the ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) technique
Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) is a sphincter-preserving operation for anal fistulas. Although it has advantages in preserving continence after surgery, it is difficult to perform owing to the narrow field of view. We performed a modified surgical procedure based on the LIFT to overcome these drawbacks. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Risk Factors for Contralateral Central Lymph Node Metastasis in Unilateral cN0 Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Meta-analysis
Central lymph node metastasis(CLNM) is common in papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC). LNM is related to local recurrence and adverse prognosis. The extent of prophylactic central lymph node dissection(pCLND) is not well defined. We aim to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for contralateral central lymph node metastasis (CCLNM) in unilateral clinical node-negative (cN0) PTC patients to determine the appropriate extent of pCLND. The SCARE 2018 Statement: Updating Consensus Surgical CAse REport (SCARE) Guidelines
The SCARE Guidelines were published in 2016 to provide a structure for reporting surgical case reports. Since their publication, SCARE guidelines have been widely endorsed by authors, journal editors, and reviewers, and have helped to improve reporting transparency of case reports across a range of surgical specialties. In order to encourage further progress in reporting quality, the SCARE guidelines must themselves be kept up to date. We completed a Delphi consensus exercise to update the SCARE guidelines. Prognostic significance of circulating microRNA-21 expression in esophageal, pancreatic and colorectal cancers; a systematic review and meta-analysis
Literature has shown that aberrantly expressed microRNAs may have implications in certain cancers. A wealth of studies signal potential prognostic role of microRNA-21 in GIT cancers. This meta-analysis quantitatively determines prognostic significance of circulating microRNA-21 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and colorectal carcinoma (CRC). The efficacy and safety of parecoxib for reducing pain and opioid consumption following total knee arthroplasty: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
The goal of the current meta-analysis is to make a credible and overall assessment about the efficacy and safety of parenteral parecoxib for pain control in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Liposomal bupivacaine reduces narcotic use and time to flatus in a retrospective cohort of patients who underwent laparotomy
Sustained release liposomal bupivacaine (LB) is a new pain control option that can reduce opioid use after laparotomy, which is known to prolong ileus, length of stay. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with staple line reinforcement with oversewing and staple line inversion vs buttressing material: a randomized clinical trial
Postoperative nausea and vomiting are relevant complications after restrictive bariatric procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy, mainly secondary to a drastic reduction in the gastric volume. However, other causes can be involved. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), with staple line reinforcement with oversewing vs buttressing material. Editor ’s Perspectives – October 2018
In the September issue of the Editor ’s Perspectives, I talked about endoscopic mucosal resection, or EMR in short, for relatively large sessile polyps without a stalk in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract (GIT) using flexible endoscopy. The snaring is done with a diathermy snare, either in piecemeal or en bloc. The risk of p erforation of the GIT increases with the size of the sessile polyp. Three EMR methods have since developed to decrease the risk of GIT perforation for a relatively large sessile polyp: (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) in predicting acute kidney injury following orthotopic liver transplantation: A systematic review
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) usually occurring early post-transplant. Multiple causes include graft preservation injury, blood loss, hypotension but also severity of recipient liver disease. Early intervention in AKI has both short and long term patient benefits. Unfortunately there are no current clinical biomarkers of early AKI. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)
