#25 First Sutureless Veriset(TM) Patch Laparoscopic Repair of Perforated Duodenal Ulcer (poster presentation)
Aim: A new haemostatic patch (VerisetTM Medtronic) to stop bleeding was recently introduced. Its triple layer construction of oxidized regenerated cellulose, trilysine and reactive polyethylene glycol forms a hydrogel barrier and adherent sealant that can withstand high systolic pressures. These unique properties of an impenetrable barrier with strong adhesion within 30 seconds, and full absorption after 28 days, led us to postulate that it could be used for other indications, like bowel perforations. #26 Exploring training, standardisation and monitoring of medical devices in assisted vaginal birth studies: protocol for a systematic review (poster presentation)
Background: Introduction of novel medical devices into clinical practice has limited guidelines on evaluating the device ’s journey. This poor methodological rigour can be a risk to patient safety. Assisted vaginal birth is a vital tool within obstetrics. In skilled hands, it can markedly improve maternal and neonatal outcomes arising from complications in the second stage of labour. Historically, both forceps and v entouse devices have been used to assist birth. As new devices for assisted vaginal birth are being developed, consideration for how the efficacy and effectiveness of new technologies is evaluated, is require...

Editor ’s Perspectives – November 2018
Rigid endoscopy started by designing rigid endoscopes which went through the natural orifices of the human body, e.g. proctoscopes or sigmoidoscopes through the anus, cystourethoscopes through the urethral orifice, laryngoscopes or oesophagoscopes through the mouth. Many of these scopes have gradually been replaced by flexible endoscopes which can go further into the human body along the lumens of the various organs. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Subplatysmal or subfascial approach in totally endoscopic thyroidectomy has better postoperative efficacy for voice, sensory, swallowing symptoms and cosmetic result. Cohort study
After totally endoscopic thyroidectomy (TET), patients usually suffer from voice, sensory, swallowing symptoms and they are also concerned with the postoperative cosmetic result. We compared the effects of subfascial dissection method with the subplatysmal method in TET on postoperative symptoms and cervical appearance. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

The current optimal multimodality treatments for oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Multimodality treatments including definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) or chemotherapy (nCT) followed by surgery (S) are frequently used to improve prognosis in locally advanced oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (LAESCC), while the optimal multimodality regimen has yet to be defined; therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to find out the current best multimodality regimen for LAESCC. Phenylephrine vs Ephedrine in Cesarean Delivery Under Spinal Anesthesia: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-analysis
In the past 20 years, many studies compared phenylephrine with ephedrine to prevent or treat hypotension in elective or emergency cesarean delivery and parturients with pre-eclampsia. A meta-analysis of the abovementioned trials is needed. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Laparoscopic hepatectomy versus open hepatectomy in the management of posterosuperior segments of the Liver:A systematic review and meta-analysis
Previous guidance and consensus have well-addressed the advantages of laparoscopic procedures in the anterolateral segments of II, III, IVb and V of the liver, as for lesions located in the posterosuperior segments of I, IVa, VII and VIII is challenging but has become more practical recently due to progress in operative techniques. The PROCESS 2018 Statement: Updating Consensus Preferred Reporting Of CasE Series in Surgery (PROCESS) Guidelines
The PROCESS guidelines were published in 2016 to provide a structure for reporting surgical case series. The PROCESS guidelines have since been widely endorsed by a number of journals. The requirement to report compliance with each item outlined in the PROCESS statement has improved the reporting transparency of case series across a number of surgical specialties. Here, we undertook a new Delphi consensus exercise to update the PROCESS guidelines. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)
