Reduction of last minute cancellations in elective urology surgery
Aim: Last minute cancellations of elective surgery negatively impact both patient and hospital, leading to inefficient use of resources, reduced capacity and increased waiting lists. The aims were to determine the cancellation rate in urology, to analyse the reasons driving cancellations, and to implement targeted solutions. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Management of traumatic rib fractures within a high volume district-general hospital
Aim: Optimal management of traumatic rib fractures is essential in reducing the incidence of secondary morbidity and mortality. Multiple rib fractures, if poorly managed can rapidly result in pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. Our aim was to audit surgical management of traumatic rib fractures according to recommendations given by the British Journal of Anaesthesia. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Development of pan-speciality collaborative research networks: Idea generation
Aim: Trainee research collaborative networks have revolutionised the way clinical research is undertaken. The North East has three trainee collaboratives; CORNET (Trauma& Orthopaedics), INCARNNET (Intensive Care& Anaesthetics) and NoSTRA (General Surgery). These collaboratives have come together as a pan-specialty network to identify and develop important clinical research questions common to all three specialties. Routine pus swabs during incision and drainage of abscesses: Are they worth it?
Aims: 41% of NHS providers are on track for 34% reduction in carbon footprint by 2020. Medical instruments contribute 13% towards NHS England ’s carbon footprint, with 75% from acute services. Cultures during incision and drainage are potential sources of unnecessary CO2 emissions. We aimed to evaluate whether cultures impact management and whether more selective approach could reduce cost/emissions without impacting care. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

The Gent-O ’Clock: Improving patient safety - gentamicin monitoring in an acute receiving surgical ward
Aim: Accurate prescribing and monitoring of gentamicin are important given its high profile side-effects including nephrotoxicity. Junior doctors are tasked with taking serum levels at multiple times during a shift, which may inadvertently get missed. Gent-O ’Clock encompasses four 1-hour windows to alert junior doctors for monitoring. Evaluate the accuracy of gentamicin monitoring within a single General Surgery ward during a receiving week before and after introduction of Gent-O’Clock. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Quality improvement from theory to practice: A case of successful implementation of plan, do, study, act model in improving surgical acute clinic services
Aim: In an understaffed, under-resourced, overwhelmed NHS, quality improvement initiatives are essential. Quality models, such as the ‘Plan, Do, Study, Act’ (PDSA) model, have thus been widely implemented. This project aimed to improve our acute surgical clinic services by a clinician-led redesign of a service delivery system using the PDSA model. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)
