Misadventure by foley urethral catheter resulting in ureteric obstruction
Background: A 67 year old lady presented to the hospital emergency department with a history of right sided abdominal pain, haematuria, chills and urine bypassing the catheter three days after a catheter change in the community. She had a raised white cell count (16.5 x109/L) and CRP (97mg/L). A CT revealed that the urinary catheter with inflated balloon was within the distal right ureter causing obstruction and moderate hydronephrosis without ureteric rupture. "Six-Pack Ileus" - Profound paralytic ileus after strenuous abdominal resistance exercise
Paralytic ileus is a familiar and common diagnosis; often diagnosed postoperatively or seen in the emergency department. The symptoms that indicate the diagnosis, namely constipation, bloating, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, are prevalent and can be vague. However, the symptoms may represent a more serious pathology and can warrant invasive investigations or those that involve radiation exposure. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

A case of paratesticular mesothelioma causing acute abdomen
Malignant diseases from mesothelial tissue have high morbidity and mortality rates and significantly low prevalence. The rate is as it follows: pleura, peritoneum, pericardium, tunica vaginalis testis, as the last two are incredibly uncommon (less than 5%). Paratesticular mesothelioma, being extremely rare, is not typically considered as a cause for acute abdomen. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Late and complete gastric band erosion - Should we have a lower index of suspicion?
We present the case of a 50 year old female who was found to have complete gastric band erosion nearly a decade after insertion. CT Scan and endoscopy revealed a free intra-gastric band causing partial gastric outlet obstruction. Her only symptom was vague upper abdominal pain which was worsened post-prandially. Band erosion is a recognised complication of gastric banding with rates of up to 7% but the mean presentation is at 22 months following insertion. Serious acute complications of erosion have been documented including bowel obstruction, perforation, and major haemorrhage. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Case report describing appendicular diverticulosis presenting as an acute appendicitis
Introduction: Appendicular diverticulosis (Diverticulosis of the appendix) is an uncommon clinical condition that although can cause chronic abdominal pain, it usually presents with right iliac fossa acute pain. Distinguishing it from appendicitis is important as DA carries higher risk of perforation and may be associated with an underlying malignancy. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Cloacal rupture: An obstetricians nightmare - Words of wisdom
Aim: Tears of the recto-vaginal septum with intact anal sphincter are rare, presumably due to the sphincter having the narrowest diameter of the birth canal. We are presenting a rare case of a patient known with ulcerative colitis(UC),with a fourth degree tear of the recto-vaginal septum with intact anal sphincter after delivery. A defunctioning colostomy and recto-vaginal repair was performed. Learning points will be highlighted in this article. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)
