Mesenteric science and sigmoid volvulus: Should we take a step back?
Aim: Mesenteric science is a new and developing field of anatomical study. The variability of the fixation of mesentery can encourage sigmoid volvulus (SV), accounting for up to 50% of intestinal obstruction in the developing world. The aim of this project was to explore existing risk factors and the trigger for SV at the time of occurrence. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Prostate cancer progression: Sodium salicylate, the active metabolite of aspirin inhibits nuclear factor-kappa B (NF κB) pathway
In this study, we examine the role of NF κB pathway in PNT2 (normal prostate), DU145 (prostatic brain metastasis), PC3 (prostatic bone metastasis). (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Pilot study: Lessons learned from researching novel ways to measure patellofemoral instability radiologically
Aim: Clinically, patients with patellar instability present with either pain or instability or both. Radiologically, patellar instability can be classified under trochlear dysplasia and measured by the difference between tibial tubercle to trochlear grove (TT-TG), with an abnormal measurement of>20mm and there may be other radiological features. It can be scored with Kujala clinical scoring, which also serves as a measurement of success of surgery. Postoperative satisfaction can be anywhere between 60-95%. Is there a difference in quality of life after mastectomy compared to breast conserving surgery?
Aim: This review aims to assess relevant literature that measure the differences in QoL after Mastectomy (ME) compared to Breast conserving surgery (BCS), using 2 evaluation tools; the EORTC QLQ-C30/EORTC QLQ-BR23 or the FACT-B. The relevance of patient demographics and clinical characteristics will also be assessed. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Axillary clearance following positive sentinel lymph node biopsy in symptomatic breast cancers: Time for a more selective approach?
Aim: Performing axillary nodal clearance (ANC) in all patients with positive sentinel node biopsy (SNB) may lead to overtreatment and unnecessary morbidity. We sought to assess our practice of ANCs following SNBs in symptomatic patients. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Gynaecomastia - Standardising evaluation to facilitate a streamline care pathway
Aim: Gynaecomastia causes include increased oestrogen activity, decreased testosterone activity, or taking certain medications. Although its aetiology is mostly benign, it often causes patients considerable anxiety, and assessment is variable. A detailed history, physical examination, and relevant investigations are necessary to determine the cause. Currently no certified standards exist for its management. Causes of delayed discharge following breast cancer conservative surgery in a district general hospital
Aim: NHS improvement advocated deliverance of major breast surgery, excluding reconstruction, safely as a day case or one night stay. Patients that had breast conservative surgeries in our unit are discharged within 23hours of admission. The aim of this study is to analyse our unit performance and identify factors that contribute to delay discharges. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Assessment of pre-operative factors in breast cancer patients to avoid the use of one step nucleic acid amplification analysis of the sentinel lymph node
Aim: To identify pre-operative factors that can predict patients who will have a low risk of metastatic disease within the sentinel lymph node (SLN). This will allow the safe omission of OSNA analysis of the SLN in breast cancer patients requiring standard histological SLN analysis rather than immediate OSNA analysis, therefore reducing surgical operating time, negating the costly requirement for OSNA reagents and improve theatre utilisation. Sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with recurrent breast cancer and previous axillary surgery: A review
Aim: Breast cancer is the most frequently occurring malignancy and the commonest cause of cancer death in women worldwide; with 1 in 8 women developing the disease in their lifetime. Axillary staging provides information on lymph node status which is a significant prognostic indicator; no specific surgical procedure is currently suggested as best practice for recurrent disease. This paper critically reviews literature looking at identification rates of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in patients with locally recurrent breast cancer (LRBC), as well as the effect of previous axillary surgery. Does nipple discharge cytology add value to the diagnosis of underlying pathology in the era of digital imaging
Aim: Nipple discharge is a common presentation in symptomatic breast clinics constitution 5-10% of new referrals. The role of nipple discharge cytology in the diagnosis of underlying pathology remains controversial often with mixed results. We aim to analyse our specialist unit ’s experience.
