Perspectives on expedited partner therapy for chlamydia: a survey of health care providers
This study finds that in a setting where expedited partner therapy is not expressly permitted, health care providers still use the practice but also experience barriers that limit uptake. Legislation expressly endorsing expedited partner therapy in the state and in medical institutions is needed to increase expedited partner therapy use. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

Efficacy of raltegravir-containing regimens in antiretroviral-naïve and -experienced individuals in routine clinical practice
This study shows again the overall long-term efficacy of raltegravir-based ART and furthermore gives reference for a comparable efficacy of dual and standard nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitor–backbone regimens in experienced patients on raltegravir over a period of 48 weeks in a real-life cohort where patients with severe comorbidities were included. Sexually transmitted infection diagnoses among Hispanic immigrant and migrant men who have sex with men in the United States
Hispanic immigrant/migrant men who have sex with men (MSM) should be at higher risk for sexually transmitted infections/human immunodeficiency virus (STIs/HIV) given individual-level factors associated with the migration process that have been theorised to increase susceptibility to STIs/HIV among migrant populations. However, relatively little is known if these individual level factors are actually associated with the STI prevalence among this population. During 2005–2007, 2576 men and women foreign-born Hispanics were surveyed at three community-based organisations offering services to immigrant/migrant communities...

Outcomes of on-site antiretroviral therapy provision in a South African correctional facility
We report (1) mortality (using survival analysis); (2) retention in the programme (to 09/2009); and (3) virological suppression at six and 12 months (<400 copies/ml) following ART initiation. In total, 404 started ART (median age 33 years; 91.3% men; median baseline CD4 cell count 152 cells/µl [interquartile range 85–225]). Among 299 starting ART for the first time (ART-naïve), 23 deaths occurred during 252 person-years (median follow-up nine months). Mortality rates were 17.2 at 0–6 months (95% confidence interval 10.9–26.9) and 2.8 at >6 months (95% confidence interval 1.1–7.5)...

A prospective study of haematological changes after switching from stavudine to zidovudine-based antiretroviral treatment in HIV-infected children
Long-term use of stavudine is associated with a high incidence of lipodystrophy, warranting its substitution with zidovudine in first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens. In a prospective observational study, we determined the spectrum and severity of haematological changes after switching from stavudine- to zidovudine-based ART in Indian children aged 2–18 years who had received a stavudine-based ART regimen for at least 48 weeks. They were followed for 48 weeks for changes in haematological parameters and CD4 cell counts after switching to zidovudine. Of the 60 children analysed, 45 (75%) showed a significan...

Ocular involvement in an HIV-infected patient: not always an infectious disease. An interesting case without apparent cause
We describe the case of a young girl with vertically-transmitted HIV infection who presented with chronic ocular inflammation characterized by several relapses and remissions. Good viral and immunological status made infective or neoplastic causes unlikely; the diagnosis was challenging and finally spontaneous remission was observed after several months. Clinical and histopathological findings made idiopathic orbital inflammatory syndrome the most probable diagnosis for our patient. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

An audit of HIV treatment outcomes in a UK inner city cohort
We describe the demographics and treatment outcomes of a HIV-infected cohort from Croydon University Hospital, London, UK. We showed that the Croydon Cohort had good viral load suppression (98.6% with viral load < 100 copies/ml and 99.0% with viral load < 200 copies/ml) despite being a potentially challenging cohort in a deprived area of London. The viral load outcomes are better than the Public Health England data from 2014 and the latest British HIV Association audit using data from 2009. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

Adverse pregnancy outcomes following syphilis treatment in pregnancy in the UK
Syphilis infection in pregnancy is known to cause a number of severe adverse pregnancy outcomes, including second-trimester miscarriage, stillbirth, very pre-term delivery and neonatal death, in addition to congenital syphilis. A retrospective review of women with positive syphilis serology and a pregnancy outcome between 2005 and 2012 in Leeds, UK, was performed. In all, 57 cases of positive syphilis serology in pregnancy were identified: 24 with untreated syphilis treated in the current pregnancy (Group 1); seven with reported but unconfirmed prior treatment who were retreated (Group 2); and 26 adequately treated prior t...
