The Mediating Role of Protective Behavioral Strategies for Marijuana in the Relationship Between Personality and Cannabis Use Outcomes
AbstractAnxiety sensitivity (AS), hopelessness (H), sensation seeking (SS), and impulsivity (IMP) are traits implicated in substance misuse risk. Protective behavioral strategies for marijuana (PBS-M) are behaviors that decrease adverse effects of cannabis use. We hypothesized H, SS, and IMP would be associated with increased adverse cannabis outcomes via decreased PBS-M use, whereas AS would be indirectly associated with decreased cannabis outcomes via increased PBS-M use, and directly associated with increased cannabis-related problems. Analyses were conducted on data from N  = 520 past six-month cannabis-using unive...

Your Classmates Eat Junk Food and You Become Depressed —the Peer Effects of Junk Food Consumption on Depression
This study examines how peers’ j unk food consumption is related to one’s depressive symptoms among junior high students in China and explores the underlying mechanisms. We relied on path models to explore data from the Chinese Education Panel Survey (CEPS). The analytic sample consisted of 8221 Chinese junior high students. The path analysis decomposed the total effect of peers’ junk food consumption on one’s level of depression into direct and indirect effects. Results revealed that peers’ junk food consumption is consequential to one’s level of depression among Chinese junior high students. There were three ...

Triangling in Family of Origin, Internet Addiction, and Social Media Addiction: What Is the Role of Experiential Avoidance in the Relationship?
AbstractOne of the factors contributing towards a better understanding of social media addiction and internet addiction among university students is family-of-origin experiences. Triangling is one of the factors associated with these online addictions. Moreover, university students with higher experiential avoidance (lower psychological flexibility) may fail to cope with the adverse effects of triangling and develop problematic online behaviors. The present cross-sectional study investigated the mediating role of experiential avoidance in the relationship between triangling, internet addiction, and social media addiction. ...

A Proof of Concept Study to Assess the Imbalance of Self-Reported Wanting and Liking as a Predictor of Problematic Addictive Behaviors
AbstractTolerance, one of the key features of addiction, is a highly debated criterion for behaviors, considered controversial and difficult to assess. The Incentive-Sensitization Theory of Addiction (IST) provides a robust empirical background on the dynamics of the motivational and hedonic systems underlying addiction, reflecting tolerance. The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to introduce wanting and liking as an IST-based measure of tolerance. Survey data were analyzed on two potentially problematic substance use behaviors (alcohol and nicotine use) and seven potentially problematic behaviors (eating, gaming, por...

A Preliminary Assessment of Short-Term Social and Substance Use-Related Outcomes Among Clients of Integrated Safer Opioid Supply Pilot Programs in Toronto, Canada
AbstractCanada is experiencing an ongoing overdose crisis, driven by a toxic unregulated drug supply. Integrated safer supply pilot programs offer pharmaceutical alternatives, coupled with comprehensive support services, to individuals using unregulated drug supply who are at high risk of overdose. We collected data from December 2020 to January 2023 on clients receiving safer opioid supply from five frontline service providers in Toronto, Canada, using interviewer-administered questionnaires. We assessed the incidence rate ratio of self-reported overdose comparing pre- and post-enrolment in the programs and examined chang...

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Positive-Controlled, Multicenter Clinical Trial on the Efficacy and Safety of ShuganJieyu Capsule and St. John ’s Wort for Major Depressive Disorder with Somatic Complaints
AbstractPrevious studies have found the effect of ShuganJieyu capsule and St. John ’s wort on the treatment of depression and explored their potential benefits for somatic symptoms, while the evidence of comparison of them for depression with somatic complaints is lacking. In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, 198 major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with somatic complaints were randomly allocated, 92 in the ShuganJieyu capsule group, and 91 in the St. John’s wort group completed 8 weeks treatment. Primary outcome was the change score of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) at week 8. ...

The YouTube Addiction Scale: Psychometric Evidence for a New Instrument Developed Based on the Component Model of Addiction
AbstractTechnological advances have created the environment for Internet addiction (IA). A specific form of IA is social media addiction. Moreover, social media addiction may be further classified into general or specific social media addiction, with YouTube addiction among the latter because YouTube is viewed as a video streaming application. The present study aimed to design an instrument assessing YouTube addiction (named as the YouTube Addiction Scale, YAS) for psychometric testing. Guided by the component model of addiction, the YAS included six items corresponding to salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal...

Trajectories of Psychological Distress of Men Treated at Aboriginal Residential Rehabilitation Services for Alcohol and Drug Misuse
AbstractAboriginal residential rehabilitation services in New South Wales provide accommodation and treatment for alcohol and other drug dependence, primarily to Aboriginal Australians. While it is known that many clients arrive at these services with high levels of psychological distress, estimates of how levels of psychological distress change during treatment have been lacking. Latent class growth models were fitted to repeated observations of Kessler ’s K10 measure of psychological distress of male clients at four rehabilitation services. K10 trajectories were best described by four trajectory classes, high initial b...

Temporal Trends in the Incidence of Depressive Disorders Across China, Japan, and South Korea: an Age-Period-Cohort Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
In conclusion, older adults are at a higher risk of depressive disorders, and their incidence has increased over the last three decades across all the three East Asian countries. Immediate measures, including popularizing knowledge about depressive disorders, improving access to me ntal health services, and increasing investment in basic and applied research on depressive disorders, should be taken to prevent depressive disorders in older adults and to provide support for those with depressive disorders.
