A career in solving clinical-pathological conundrums: Heyde syndrome, anti-platelet factor 4 disorders, and microvascular limb ischemic necrosis
Int J Lab Hematol. 2024 Mar 3. doi: 10.1111/ijlh.14261. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHematology is a clinical specialty with strong roots in the laboratory; accordingly, the lab can help solve perplexing clinical problems. This review highlights clinical-pathological conundrums addressed during my 35-year hematology career at McMaster University. Heyde syndrome is the association between aortic stenosis and bleeding gastrointestinal (GI) angiodysplasia where the bleeding is usually cured by aortic valve replacement; the chance reading of a neonatal study showing reversible deficiency of high-molecular-weight (HMW) multime...

Variability in combinations of APTT reagent and substrate plasma for a one-stage clotting assay to measure factor VIII products
CONCLUSION: In addition to APTT reagents, variations in F8DPs used for OSAs can also affect FVIII:C results. F8DPs as well as the APTT reagent used for OSA should be chosen with caution, and laboratories should evaluate reagents for F8DPs as they currently do for APTT reagents, especially when lot changes occur.PMID:38426662 | DOI:10.1111/ijlh.14258 (Source: International Journal of Laboratory Hematology)

Evaluation of AQUIOS STEM, a novel method for automated CD34+ stem cell enumeration using flow cytometry
CONCLUSIONS: The STEM system on AQUIOS CL allows automated enumeration of CD34+ stem cells, demonstrating good analytical performance and promising overall outcomes in peripheral blood and fresh apheresis products.PMID:38421076 | DOI:10.1111/ijlh.14253 (Source: International Journal of Laboratory Hematology)

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and systemic immune-inflammatory index as markers of response to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in persons with multiple sclerosis
CONCLUSION: High NLR and SII index values after the aHSCT were associated with a worsening in the EDSS score. However, since this is the first ever study that compared NLR and SII index with the aHSCT response in persons with MS, further studies must be performed to corroborate this information.PMID:38421242 | DOI:10.1111/ijlh.14259 (Source: International Journal of Laboratory Hematology)
