Clinical outcomes and perioperative morbidity and mortality following segmental resections of the colon for Crohn ’s colitis
ConclusionThe results indicate that both a complex surgical site and a complex surgical procedure lead to a higher perioperative morbidity in colonic resections for Crohn ’s colitis. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Developing a multivariable prediction model of global health-related quality of life in patients treated for rectal cancer: a prospective study in five countries
ConclusionWe found that fatigue and pain were two significant factors associated with posttreatment global HRQoL in patients treated for rectal cancer T1-T3 Nx. Interventions to reduce fatigue and pain could enhance global HRQoL after rectal cancer treatment.Trial registrationThis trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov No. NCT00297791 (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Analgesic effect of local anaesthetic in haemorrhoid banding: systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThis review supports the use of LA for reducing early post-procedural pain following haemorrhoid banding. The evidence was limited by small sample sizes and substantial heterogeneity across studies.RegistrationPROSPERO (ID CRD42022322234) (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Pulse pressure variation guided goal-direct fluid therapy decreases postoperative complications in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionUtilizing PPV as a monitoring index for GDFT can improve short-term prognosis in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer.Registration numberChiCTR2300067361; date of registration: January 5, 2023. Long-term prognosis after stapled and hand-sewn ileal pouch –anal anastomoses for familial adenomatous polyposis: a multicenter retrospective study
ConclusionStapled ileal pouch –anal anastomosis negatively affected the overall survival of familial adenomatous polyposis patients. Therefore, hand-sewn ileal pouch–anal anastomosis is recommended for better prognosis in these patients. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Prediction of 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year mortality after colorectal cancer surgery using a data-driven approach
ConclusionWe were able to train prediction models for the risk of short-term mortality on a data set of four combined national health databases with good discrimination and calibration. We found that one cohort including all operated patients resulted in better performing models than cohorts based on several subgroups. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Long-term results and quality of life after stapled hemorrhoidopexy vs Doppler-guided HAL-RAR: a propensity score matching analysis
ConclusionsHAL-RAR is a safe and feasible technique in treating grade II-III hemorrhoids showing better outcomes in terms of postoperative pain and QoL.SignificanceThis paper adds a new perspective in comparing the HAL-RAR and SH, focusing the attention on the patients and not surgical techniques. A long and difficult follow-up was completed to fully understand the long-term results and the impact on the QoL of the patients who underwent these procedures. Ethnic disparities in pediatric appendicitis: the impact of hispanic ethnicity on presentation, complications, and postoperative outcomes
ConclusionHispanic children are more likely to present with complicated appendicitis, contributing to increased postoperative complications. Notably, upon adjustment for the impact of complicated appendicitis, our findings suggest potentially favorable outcomes for Hispanic ethnicity. This emphasizes the need to understand delays in presentation to improve outcomes in the Hispanic population. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)
