Effects of sarcopenia and myosteatosis are alleviated in reduced port surgery for diverticulitis
ConclusionBody composition profiles had no impact on the clinical course in our cohort. Minimally invasive surgery may potentially compensate for the adverse effects of sarcopenia and myosteatosis in diverticulitis. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

FIT for purpose: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial to personalize surveillance colonoscopy for individuals at elevated risk of colorectal cancer
ConclusionThis study will establish the safety, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability of utilizing a low FIT Hb result to extend colonoscopy surveillance intervals in a cohort at elevated risk for CRC. This personalized approach to CRC surveillance will lead to a reduction in unnecessary colonoscopies, increases in healthcare savings, and a better patient experience.  Trial registrationRegistration was approved on December 9, 2019 with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ANZCTR 12619001743156. The modified Glasgow Prognostic Score indicates an increased risk of anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer
DiscussionPreoperative inflammation seems to be involved in the development of anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for cancer. Inclusion into prediction models did not result in accurate leakage prediction, but high degrees of systemic inflammation might still be important in clinical decision-making. Does coffee affect bowel recovery following minimally invasive colorectal operations? A three-armed randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsCoffee (caffeinated or decaffeinated) does not expedite the return of bowel function following minimally invasive operation.Trial registrationhttps://classic.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02639728 NCT02639728. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Clinical features and prognostic factors of brain metastases from colorectal cancer: a single center experience
ConclusionPatients with left-sided CRC, especially those with lung metastases, are prone to brain metastases, and patients with brain metastases as the first metastatic site have a higher rate of supratentorial metastases. Young patients with right hemicolon cancer and patients who have not undergone primary lesion resection have a shorter time for the occurrence of BM. Patients with colorectal lung metastases, especially those young with right-sided CRC, require close imaging surveillance of BM. The prognosis of CRC patients with BM and lung metastases is poor, and comprehensive treatment based on surgery could significan...

The prognostic significance of microsatellite instability in colorectal cancer: a Swedish multi-center study
ConclusionDespite distant metastases being less common in patients with MSI, there was no association between MSI and overall, relapse-free, or cancer-specific survival. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Surgery for young onset diverticulitis: is it curative?
ConclusionBoth neoplasia and recurrence after resection for diverticular disease in young onset patients are rare. Leaks after primary anastomosis even in the elective setting warrant careful consideration of a defunctioning ileostomy. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture for secondary constipation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionAccording to the current studies, the overall relief rate of patients with secondary constipation after electroacupuncture treatment was improved, the defecation pressure score was reduced, the weekly natural defecation was more complete, and adverse reactions were not increased. Electroacupuncture therefore shows potential for treating constipation, but more high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)
