Tiny insects against the weather —flight and foraging patterns of Frankliniella schultzei (Thripidae) not altered by onset of rainfall
Abstract To survive in nature, organisms may need to take direct action to mitigate specific dangers from their environmental surroundings. Tiny flying insects are thought to be at particular risk from rainfall that would be of negligible concern to larger animals. The study species Frankliniella schultzei is a thrips that inhabits flowers and feeds mostly on petal tissue and pollen. While found to respond in the laboratory to decreases in atmospheric pressure associated with cyclonic conditions (rather than merely heavy rainfall), their responses to conditions preceding rainfall have not been tested in the field. Initial ...

HT ‐SuperSAGE of the gut tissue of a Vip3Aa‐resistant Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) strain provides insights into the basis of resistance
Abstract Multi‐toxin Bt‐crops expressing insecticidal toxins with different modes of action e.g. Cry and Vip, are expected to improve resistance management in target pests. While Cry1A resistance has been relatively well characterized in some insect species, this is not the case for Vip3A, for which no mechanism of resistance has yet been identified. Here we applied HT‐SuperSAGE to analyze the transcriptome of the gut tissue of tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens (F.) laboratory‐selected for Vip3Aa resistance. From a total of 1 324 252 sequence reads, 58951 26‐bp tags were obtained representing 17 751 non‐singl...

Artificial sentinel prey can be useful to measure and compare predation pressure in various habits. Green‐coloured plasticine caterpillars are readily attacked by up to 14 groups of predatory organisms, and can be identified by their attack marks. Predators include various arthropods, birds, and mammals. Information collected by using sentinel prey is summarised in the review article by Lövei and Ferrante (see pages 528‐542).
