Disentangling the role of management, vegetation structure, and plant quality for Orthoptera in lowland meadows
Abstract Seminatural grasslands provide habitats for various species and are important for biodiversity conservation. The understanding of the diverse responses of species and traits to different grassland management methods is therefore urgently needed. We disentangled the role of grassland management (fertilization and irrigation), vegetation structure (biomass, sward height) and plant quality (protein and fiber content) for Orthoptera communities in lowland hay meadows in Germany. We found vegetation structure to be the most important environmental category in explaining community structure of Orthoptera (species richne...

Genome ‐wide identification and characterization of HSP gene superfamily in whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and expression profiling analysis under temperature stress
Abstract Heat shock proteins (HSP) are essential molecular chaperones that play important roles in the stress stimulation of insects. Bemisia tabaci, a phloem feeder and invasive species, can cause extensive crop damage through direct feeding and transmission of plant viruses. Here we employed comprehensive genomics approaches to identity HSP superfamily members in the Middle East Asia Minor 1 whitefly genome. In total, we identified 26 Hsp genes, including three Hsp90, 17 Hsp70, one Hsp60 and five sHSP (small heat shock protein) genes. The HSP gene superfamily of whitefly is expanded compared with the other five insects s...

Molecular phylogeny of Entomobrya (Collembola: Entomobryidae) from China: colour pattern groups and multiple origins
This study highlights the great phylogenetic values as well as taxonomic uses of colouration in Chinese Entomobrya. Multiple phylogenetic and biogeographic origins of Entomobrya imply its complicated relationships with both scaled and unscaled genera of Entomobryinae. This article is protected by copyright. A comparison of honeybee (Apis mellifera) queen, worker and drone larvae by RNA ‐Seq
This study indicates that early in development the queen caste has the most distinct gene expression profile, perhaps reflecting the very rapid growth and morphological specialization of this caste compared to workers and drones. Later in development the haploid male drones have the most distinct gene expression profile, perhaps reflecting the influence of ploidy or sex determination on gene expression. Proteomics analysis of Trichoplusia ni midgut epithelial cell brush border membrane vesicles
This study reports the identification of proteins from BBM vesicles (BBMVs) using single dimension polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis coupled with multidimensional protein identification technology. More than 3000 proteins were associated with the BBMV, of which 697 were predicted to possess either a signal peptide, at least one transmembrane domain or a GPI‐anchor signal. Of these, bioinformatics analysis and manual curation predicted that 185 may be associated with the BBMV or epithelial cell plasma membrane. These are discussed with respect to their predicted functions, namely digestion, nutrient uptake, cell signalli...

Effects of cucumber mosaic virus ‐infected chilli plants on non‐vector Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)
This study was conducted to determine how cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)‐infected chilli plants affect the fitness and settling preferences of nonvector whitefly, Bemisia tabaci adults under dual‐choice conditions with volatile organic compounds analyzed using solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Results showed that the presence of CMV in chilli plants substantially affects the settling preferences of the B. tabaci, which preferred to settle on noninfected plants. Duration of the egg stage and the longevity and fecundity of adult B. tabaci on CMV‐infected chilli ...

Predatory Reduviidae (Apiomerus sp.) feeding on a small Lygaeidae in a Chaco Serrano forest from Córdoba, Argentina. In the last decades, agricultural intensification and urbanization led to the loss of more than 95% of these native forests. This strongly affected insect biodiversity, particularly of natural enemies that provide the ecosystem service of pest control. There is an urgent need to maintain remnants of natural ecosystems in order to conserve the vast diversity of insects that depends on them (see pages 891–901). Photo provided Ezequiel González.
