It is often assumed that learning improves foraging, but its direct benefits are not often examined. We demonstrate the contribution of learning to the foraging success of desert ants when a trained colony successfully competes against a na ïve one. The outcome also depends on the relative group size. DesertCataglyphis ants search individually for food (mostly dead prey) without laying pheromone trails (see pages 241-250). The cover photo shows aCataglyphis niger worker searching for food in its typical sandy habitat. Photo provided Arik Dorfman. (Source: Insect Science)

Homeobox protein A1 ‐like and DNA methylation regulate embryo‐specific Zinc finger protein 615 gene expression and embryonic development in the silkworm Bombyx mori
In this study, we investigated the mechanism that regulates the expression ofBombyx mori Zinc finger protein 615 (ZnF 615), which is a downstream gene of DNA methyltransferase 1 (Dnmt1), and its effects on the regulation of embryonic development. By progressively truncating theZnF 615 promoter, it was found that the −223 and −190 nt region, which contains homeobox (Hox) proteincis-regulatory elements (CREs), had the greatest impact on the transcription ofZnF 615. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown and overexpression ofHox family genes showed that Hox A1-like can enhance the messenger RNA level ofZnF 615. Furth...

eIF3 subunit M regulates blood meal digestion in Rhodnius prolixus affecting ecdysis, reproduction, and survival
The downregulation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit m (eIF3m) expression inRhodnius prolixus impairs bloodmeal digestion, affecting ecdysis, reproduction, survival, and starvation resistance. AbstractIn triatomines, blood-feeding triggers many physiological processes including post embryonic development and reproduction. Different feeding habits, such as hematophagy, can shape gene functions to meet the challenges of each type of diet. The gut of blood-sucking insects faces particular challenges after feeding due to the quantity and the quality of the food ingested. A comparison of transcriptomic and p...
