Supporting a community of injury prevention giants: past, present and future
There is a well-known saying that talks about the progression of scientific knowledge and insights being built from the ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’.1 There is no doubt that as a field, injury prevention is only in the strong position it is today because we have done the same. Injury Prevention is committed to progressing this by having a focus on preserving injury prevention history, sharing this with new generations of injury researchers and shaping the field. Knowledge and recognition about injury prevention’s giants and their contributions must not be lost and our journal will take a leadersh...

Health systems research in burn care: an evidence gap map
Conclusions Major evidence gaps exist for an integrated health systems response to burns care. There is an inequity between the burden of burn injuries and HSR. Strengthening research capacity will facilitate evidence-informed health systems and policy reforms to sustainably improve access to affordable, equitable and optimal burn care and outcomes. Impact of Sources of Strength on adolescent suicide deaths across three randomized trials
This study pooled three cluster-RCTs of Sources of Strength (n=78 high schools), a universal social network-informed intervention. In each trial, matched pairs of schools were assigned to immediate intervention or wait-list. Six schools were assigned without a pair due to logistical constraints. During the study period, no suicides occurred in intervention schools vs four in control schools, that is, suicide rates of 0 vs. 20.86/100,000, respectively. Results varied across statistical tests of impact. A state-level exact test pooling all available schools showed fewer suicides in intervention vs. control schools (p=0.047);...

Firearm homicides among hispanics and white non-hispanics: measuring disparities
Firearm homicides are increasing in the United States, and firearm homicides are a critical driver of racial health disparities. One such disparity that has received limited attention is excess firearm homicides among Hispanics, relative to White Non-Hispanics; comprehensively characterising this disparity is the purpose of this brief report. Using data from CDC WONDER, we examined temporal trends (2012–2021) in firearm homicide rate disparities between Hispanics and White Non-Hispanics in the U.S. Focusing on recently elevated rates (2018–2021), we estimated this disparity across demographics (gender, age, urb...

Views of voluntary, temporary out-of-home firearm storage among individuals living in a firearm-owning home: results from a qualitative study in two states
Conclusion Programmes for voluntary, temporary out-of-home firearm storage will not be impactful unless such storage is desired and used. Understanding views of potential storage users can help support development of acceptable and feasible programmes. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Evaluating the impact of skill development for drowning prevention: a relationship-building approach to community engagement
Conclusions Creating a dialogic model of collaboration via participatory community engagements between lifeguards and researchers with the beachgoing public can successfully prompt learning drowning prevention skills. These skills are required when navigating dynamic coastal hazards at unpatrolled beaches. Supporting lifeguards and life-savers to provide skill development expands the ways that life-saving services can engage the public, including measurement of lifeguards’ contributions to coastal drowning prevention. Global burden and trends of transport injuries from 1990 to 2019: an observational trend study
Conclusion Globally, TIs still cause a serious burden, and the incidence has significantly increased, especially in people above the age of 14 and in middle-SDI and low-SDI areas, thus necessitating more attention and health interventions. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Assessing discrepancies in estimates of road traffic deaths in Brazil
Conclusion Brazil has made remarkable progress in reducing road traffic deaths in the last decade. A high-level evaluation of what has worked in Brazil could provide important guidance to other LMICs. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Implementation of the injury prevention exercise programme Knee Control+: a cross-sectional study after dissemination efforts within a football district
Conclusion The reach of Knee Control+ was fair to high, and adoption was fair in clubs, but there was a lack of policies for preventive training. Active strategies probably need to accompany dissemination of programme material. Reach, perceived effectiveness, adoption, implementation and planned maintenance were positive among coaches, but further studies are needed to analyse long-term maintenance. Regional and temporal trends of falls and injurious falls among Chinese older adults: results from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 2011-2018
Conclusions Our results indicated no temporal trend of falls, a declined trend of injurious falls, and significant regional variations in the prevalence of falls and injurious falls in 2011–2018. These findings have important implications for prioritising areas and subpopulations to prevent falls and injuries among China’s elderly population. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Burden of fatal drowning in California, 2005-2019
Conclusions California’s overall fatal drowning rate was similar to the rest of the USA but differed among subpopulations. These divergences from national data, along with regional differences in drowning population and context-related characteristics, underscore the need for state and regional level analyses to inform drowning prevention policy, programmes and research. What childrens perspectives on safe and dangerous outdoor play can tell us about their risk-seeking and injury experiences: 'You dont feel right doing the thing that got you hurt
Conclusion Our results suggest children differentiate between ‘little’ and ‘big’ injuries by reflecting on the potential loss of opportunities for play with friends. Further, they suggest children avoid play they perceive as dangerous, but enjoy ‘risk-seeking’ because it is thrilling and provides them with opportunities to push their physical and mental capabilities. Child educators and injury prevention researchers can use our findings to inform their communications with children and make play spaces more accessible to, fun and safe for children.
