Mitigating the risk of heat-related injury
There is a call for a global approach to addressing the climate crisis and its potential for adverse impacts on human health.1 Injury prevention experts have long recognised extreme heat, sun exposure and other climate effects to be important causes of injury, given the external factors that are implicated in their causation.2 Injury prevention issues around heat-related causes have become more prominent recently under the premise of climate emergency3 and frequent occurrence of heatwaves due to climate change.4 Heat-related injury (sometimes also known as environmental heat stress or exertional heat illness) occurs when t...

Role of sex and gender in concussion outcome differences among patients presenting to the emergency department: a systematic review
Conclusion This systematic review highlighted that sex is reported more accurately than gender, approximately half of studies did not report either sex and/or gender as demographic information, and one-third of studies did not include SGBA. There were important sex and gender differences in the cause, ED presentation, management and outcomes of concussions. PROSPERO registration number CRD42021258613. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Trends in emergency department visits for fall-related fractures in U.S. older adults, 2001- 2020
The present study analysed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Programme to examine trends in emergency department visits (EDs) for fall-related fractures in adults aged 65 years or older between 2001 and 2020. Overall, the estimated number of ED’s visits for fall-related fractures increased from 574 000 in 2001 to 9 84 000 in 2020. After adjusting for age, fall-related fracture rates increased annually by 1.1% (95% CI: 0.4%, 1.7%) in women and by 1.3% (95% CI: 0.4%, 2.2%) in men between 2001 and 2012. Moreover, a non-significant increase in fracture rates was seen in both sexes be...

The effectiveness of installing trackside fencing in preventing railway suicides: a pre-post study design in Victoria, Australia
WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC Restricting access to means has been shown to be an effective suicide prevention measure in public places in general, and in the railway environment specifically. Some examples of restricting access to means that have been effective in the railway environment include the installation of platform screen doors and the removal of level crossings. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS Our study adds to knowledge about restricting access to means in the railway environment by examining the effectiveness of the installation of trackside fencing, and in particular, by examining whether differences in effectiven...

Quasi-experimental study finding no localised gun crime or call reduction after gun buybacks in Philadelphia
Conclusions Extant research has failed to uncover any effect of gun buybacks on citywide gun crime rates. The current results now contribute a lack of evidence at the local level to this literature. While gun buybacks remain popular with politicians and the public, this study adds to the ongoing question of whether buyback funds could be better spent more effectively. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Interrupted time series analysis of drug overdose fatalities in service-related industries versus non-service-related industries during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2018-2021
Conclusion Spikes in drug overdose mortality in both service-related and non-service-related industries during the pandemic highlight the need to consider and include industries and occupations, as well as worker populations vulnerable to infectious diseases, as integral stakeholder groups when developing and implementing drug overdose prevention interventions, and implementing infectious disease surveillance systems. Using the NEISS database to understand pressure cooker related injuries in the USA
Conclusion NEISS is a valuable tool for determining injury incidence and understanding common injury patterns associated with specific products. Consumers and manufacturers of pressure cookers can develop safety strategies targeted at preventing the product’s main injury risks. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Prevalence and factors associated with occupational injuries among building construction workers in the Gambia
Conclusion Our findings show that injuries among building construction workers are prevalent in the Gambia. Male gender, work hours, tobacco use and alcohol consumption were associated with occupational injuries in building construction. Introducing and enforcing workplace safety policies in the building construction industry may help reduce occupational injury among construction workers in the Gambia. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Development and validation of an intervention package to improve lifejacket wear for drowning prevention among occupational boaters on Lake Albert, Uganda
Conclusion The stakeholder workshop enabled a participatory approach to identify the most appropriate intervention. All the proposed interventions fell under one of the intervention functions of the BCW. The intervention should be evaluated for its effectiveness in improving lifejacket wear among occupational boaters. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Trends and patterns of violence-related mortality in Nigeria: evidence from a 16-year analysis of secondary data
Conclusion Violence-related mortality is prevalent in Nigeria and significantly contributes to adult mortality. The government must develop strategies to identify, intervene in and end high-risk conflict situations to stop the growing contribution of violence to Nigeria’s mortality experience. Financial burden of anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions in football (soccer) players: an Australian cost of injury study
Conclusion While the number of ACL reconstructions per year among football players in Australia is relatively small, the annual financial burden is high. Our study suggests that if injury prevention exercises programmes are prioritised by stakeholders in football, significant cost-savings are possible. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Barriers and facilitators to implementation of musculoskeletal injury mitigation programmes for military service members around the world: a scoping review
Conclusion Despite a robust body of literature, there is a dearth of information about programme implementation; specifically, barriers or facilitators to success. Additionally, variability in outcomes and lack of consensus on MSK-I definitions may affect the development, implementation evaluation and comparison of MSK-IMPPs. There is a need for international consensus on definitions and optimal data reporting elements when conducting injury risk mitigation research in the military. (Source: Injury Prevention)
