What is in the name? What is our game?
In 2019, a presentation for a variety of stakeholders was arranged as part of the launch event for a publication documenting the subnational magnitude of road traffic injuries in India as estimated by the Global Burden of Disease Study.1 I did not use the term ‘road accident’ and explained to the audience the need to move away from that term because accidents do not happen, they are caused. All the questions and comments that followed the presentation used ‘road accident’. The same was explained by me in another meeting to a very different audience—researchers at a leading global vehicle manuf...

Prevalence of alcohol and other drug use in patients presenting to hospital for fall-related injuries: a systematic review
Conclusions AOD exposure was common in hospitalised fall-related injuries. However, research addressing prevalence across different types of falls and the use of drugs other than alcohol was limited. Future research should address these areas to improve our understanding of which populations should be targeted in AOD and injury prevention strategies . PROSPERO registration number CRD42020188746. Reflections on mission and priorities of Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) during my first 100 days as president
It is an incredible honour for me to have become the President of SAVIR in April of 2022; a society of professionals who are committed to advancing violence and injury research, practice and education. I am also humbled by the faith colleagues have shown in me to lead this great association. In this editorial, I will share my reflections and SAVIR’s priorities in the years ahead. With support from the US CDC, injury research centre directors across the country started the National Association of Injury Control Research Centers (NAICRC) in 1990s. Several years later, NAICRC was changed to SAVIR in order to be more inc...

Linking out-of-hospital deaths with a regional hospital-based firearm injury database: a clinical researchers guide to accessing data from the National Death Index
Discussion Linking hospital-based data sets with NDI data can provide valuable information on out-of-hospital deaths. This has the potential to improve the quality of longitudinal morbidity and mortality calculations in hospital-based patient cohorts. We encountered logistic and administrative challenges in completing the online NDI Processing Portal and in preparing and receiving data from the NDI. It is our hope that the lessons learnt presented herein will help facilitate easy and streamlined acquisition of valuable NDI data for other clinical researchers. What this study adds: - A step-by-step guide for clinical resear...

Educational and ecological assessment for unintentional injuries among children under 7 years: directed qualitative research based on PRECEDE-PROCEED model
Conclusion House injuries among children are a complicated and multifaceted issue that requires a comprehensive investigation to determine the contributing factors. (Source: Injury Prevention)

State and city laws governing the use of child restraint systems in rideshare vehicles and taxicabs: requirements and responsibility
Conclusion Most states require CRS use in rideshare vehicles, but not as many require CRS use in taxis. Though states describe penalties for drivers who fail to comply with CRS requirements, these penalties do not actually facilitate the use of CRS in rideshare or taxis. Furthermore, there is ambiguity in the laws about who is responsible for the provision and installation of the restraints. To prevent serious or fatal injuries in children, policy-makers should adopt policies that require, incentivise and facilitate the use of CRS in rideshare vehicles and taxis. Effectiveness of child burn prevention campaigns in Mongolia
Conclusions The nationwide burn prevention campaign was effective in reducing non-severe burn injuries among young children. Since the campaign was primarily aimed at increasing public awareness of child burn injury risks, further interventions should be considered with passive measures to prevent severe burn injuries. Barriers and opportunities of establishing an integrated prehospital emergency response system in North West Ethiopia: a qualitative study
Conclusion and recommendation Lack of resources is not the main reason for the lack of prehospital emergency care in the study area rather; lack of commitment, ownership and high turnover of decision-makers were the main reasons for the absence of prehospital care, as viewed by respondents. On the other side, the availability of professionals, training institutions and the fact that emergency care is a shared agenda by different stakeholders were stated as an opportunity to establish the system. With the growing number of injuries and non-communicable diseases, emergency management should get due attention. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Comparing estimates of road traffic deaths and non-fatal road traffic injuries in Cambodia
Conclusion Including local epidemiological data sources from LMICs can help reduce uncertainty in estimates from global statistical models and build trust in estimates among local stakeholders. Such analysis should be used as a benchmark to assess and strengthen the completeness of reporting of the national surveillance system. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Determinants of lifejacket use among boaters on Lake Albert, Uganda: a qualitative study
Conclusion Determinants of lifejacket use among boaters include experience or witness of drowning, limited knowledge about lifejackets and distrust in the effectiveness of the available lifejackets. Mandatory lifejacket wearing alongside educational interventions might improve lifejacket use. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Public rescue tube deployment in Hawaii: protective association with rescuer drownings
Conclusion Despite valid concerns, we found no fatal rescuer drownings related to PRT use after their 2008 introduction in the county of Kauai. Instead, we observed a reduction in the number of rescuer drownings, and in their proportion of total drownings in association with the deployment of PRT. The findings of this study have the potential to directly impact ocean and other open water environment-related fatal drowning prevention policy and practice. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Trends in drowning mortality in Portugal from 1992 to 2019: comparing Global Burden of Disease and national data
Conclusions While GBD mortality data estimates are valuable in the absence of routinely collected data, they smooth variations, concealing key advocacy opportunities. Investment in country-level drowning registries enables in-depth analysis of incident circumstances. Such data are essential to informing National Water Safety Plans. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Child pedestrian and cyclist injuries, and the built and social environment across Canadian cities: the Child Active Transportation Safety and the Environment Study (CHASE)
Conclusion The built environment and social factors influence rates of child PCMVC. Opportunities to reduce child PCMVC exist through modifications to city design and road environments and implementing traffic safety interventions. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Predictors of health-related quality of life following injury in childhood and adolescence: a pooled analysis
Conclusions Postinjury HRQoL was associated with survivors’ socioeconomic status, intent, mechanism of injury and comorbidity status. Patterns of physical and psychosocial functioning postinjury differed according to sex and nature of injury sustained. The findings improve understanding of the long-term individual and societal impacts of injury in the early part of life and guide the prioritisation of prevention efforts, inform health and social service planning to help reduce injury burden, and help guide future Global Burden of Disease estimates.
