Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis due to Cladophialophora bantiana: case report and systematic review of cases
ConclusionsC. bantiana brain abscess is an emerging infection worldwide. Next generation sequencing is an upcoming promising diagnostic test. Early complete excision of the lesion with effective antifungals may improve the outcome. (Source: Infection)

Hospitalizations due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in Germany: a nationwide clinical and direct cost data analysis (2010 –2019)
ConclusionThe economic burden of RSV-related hospitalizations in Germany is substantial, even when only considering cases with RSV coded as the primary discharge diagnosis. Children represented the vast majority of RSV coded hospitalizations. However, adults and seniors hospitalized for RSV were at a higher risk of severe complications, required more costly treatments, and had higher fatality rates; although their RSV-coded hospitalization incidence showed a clear upward trend since 2017, their true hospitalization incidence is still likely to be underestimated due to lack of routine RSV testing in these age groups. Hence,...

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in bronchoalveolar fluid and blood in critically ill patients —a prospective cohort study
ConclusionWe found significant higher levels of serum suPAR in ARDS patients compared to those not fulfilling ARDS criteria. Serum and BALF-suPAR were significantly higher in those patients with evidence for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. These findings may suggest testing this biomarker for early diagnosis of fungal infection in a greater cohort. (Source: Infection)

High burden of acute respiratory tract infections leading to hospitalization at German pediatric hospitals: fall/winter 2022 –2023
ConclusionIn fall/winter 2022 –2023, German hospitals reported a sharp increase in patients with ARIs. While RSV and influenza represented the greatest proportion of ARI, SARS-CoV-2 played a less significant role. Systematic, dynamic collection of ARI data is critical for assessing real burdens on the health care system. (Source: Infection)

When surgical option is not provided: a successful multidisciplinary approach to a refractory case of sternal osteomyelitis following coronary surgery
ConclusionFor highly selected patients with sternal osteomyelitis for whom surgery is a too risky option, an approach including the contribution of various specialists might be a viable way out. (Source: Infection)

Antibiotic use in children hospitalised for influenza, 2010 –2021: the Canadian Immunization Monitoring Program Active (IMPACT)
ConclusionsOver two-third of children hospitalised for influenza received antibiotics, including over half of those without an appropriate indication for antibiotic treatment. Differences amongst study centres suggest the importance of contextual determinants of antibiotic use. (Source: Infection)

A fatal course of COVID-19 during the Omicron surge: can you estimate your patients ’ SARS-CoV-2 immune status?
We present a case of an ultimately fatal course of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-19) in an 81-year-old female patient during the Omicron surge. The patient did not represent the typical patient at risk for severe COVID-19 with significant causes of immunodeficiency. However, she had been skeptical about the vaccination for severe acute respiratory syndrome virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and had refused it. Moreover, there had been no previous COVID-19 episodes. Our case report illustrates that with regard to SARS-CoV-2, immunologically naive patients are still at risk for severe and/or even fatal courses of COVID-19. We call to impl...
