Genetic diversity and molecular evolution of Seoul virus in Hebei province, China
Infect Genet Evol. 2023 Sep 15:105503. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105503. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeoul virus (SEOV) is a major pathogen which causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), and is present all over the world. However, there are currently few long-term systematic studies of SEOV's phylogenetic and evolutionary mechanisms in epidemic areas. Thus, in this study, we used RT-PCR combined with NGS to obtain the genomes of six SEOV viruses from 1993, as well as 56 Hebei province-specific tissue samples from 1999 to 2022. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the SEOV samples could be divided into seven gro...

Genome diversity of Borrelia garinii sustained in marine transmission cycles by Ixodes uriae does not match host association but reflects the strains evolutionary history
Infect Genet Evol. 2023 Sep 14:105502. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105502. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBorrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is a species complex of spirochetal bacteria that occupy different ecological niches which is reflected in their reservoir host- and vector-associations. Borrelia genomes possess numerous linear and circular plasmids. Proteins encoded by plasmid genes play a major role in host- and vector-interaction and are important for Borrelia niche adaptation. However, the plasmid composition and therewith the gene repertoire may vary even in strains of a single species. Borrelia garinii, one of the s...

Genomic evidence of sex chromosome aneuploidy and infection-associated genotypes in the tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes, the major vector of African trypanosomiasis in Uganda
Infect Genet Evol. 2023 Sep 12:105501. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105501. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe primary vector of the trypanosome parasite causing human and animal African trypanosomiasis in Uganda is the riverine tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (Gff). Our study improved the Gff genome assembly with whole genome 10× Chromium sequencing of a lab reared pupae, identified autosomal versus sex-chromosomal regions of the genome with ddRAD-seq data from 627 field caught Gff, and identified SNPs associated with trypanosome infection with genome-wide association (GWA) analysis in a subset of 351 flies. Results f...

CRISPR-Cas systems and diversity of targeting phages in Lactobacillus johnsonii strains; insights from genome mining approach
In conclusion, the current study indicates that there is great diversity between the CRISPR-Cas systems identified in L. johnsonii strains. Such diverse CRISPR-Cas systems indicate that these systems are naturally active and important in terms of adaptive immunity and evolutionary relationships.PMID:37703922 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105500 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)

Spatial and phylogenetic patterns reveal hidden infection sources of Bacillus anthracis in an anthrax outbreak in Son La province, Vietnam
Infect Genet Evol. 2023 Sep 7;114:105496. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105496. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacillus anthracis, the bacterial cause of anthrax, is a zoonosis affecting livestock and wildlife often spilling over into humans. In Vietnam, anthrax has been nationally reportable since 2015 with cases occurring annually, mostly in the northern provinces. In April 2022, an outbreak was reported in Son La province following the butchering of a water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis. A total of 137 humans from three villages were likely exposed to contaminated meat from the animal. Early epidemiological investigations sugges...

Deciphering the evolution of the temporal and geographic distribution of French Mycobacterium bovis genotypes using a high throughput SNP-targeted amplicon sequencing method
This study allowed classifying 618 different genotypic profiles (combination of a spoligotype and 8 loci-MIRU-VNTR profiles) into the nine previously identified clusters. A global analysis of the entire collection of the National Reference Laboratory has made it possible to represent the evolution of clonal complexes and clusters in time and space for better assessing epidemiological changes of bovine tuberculosis in France.PMID:37657678 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105497 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)

Epidemiological and molecular characterization of Coxsackievirus A6 causing hand, foot, and mouth disease in the Philippines, 2012-2017
This study elucidated that CVA6 was the most prevalent enterovirus serotype causing HFMD in the Philippines in 2012-2017, with genotype D3b/RF-A circulating within this period. This study highlights the importance of viral surveillance and molecular epidemiological analysis to broaden our understanding of HFMD in the Philippines.PMID:37657679 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105498 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)
