Female gender does not have any significant impact on the early postoperative outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting: a propensity-matched analysis
ConclusionFemales have similar early postoperative outcomes compared to males in terms of composite outcomes of 30-day mortality, non-fatal MI, non-fatal CVA, and RRT among patients undergoing CABG. The outcomes are also similar when individually assessed. The off-pump technique has no additional benefit compared to the on-pump technique in females undergoing CABG. Aortic valve repair in the pediatric population: emerging role of aortic valve neocuspidization (AVNeo procedure)
AbstractManagement of aortic valve diseases in children is challenging owing to the quality and quantity of the native tissue for repair, limitations in the currently available biological materials to supplement the repair and to achieve a long-lasting durable repair in an annulus where there is still growth potential. The aortic valve neocuspidization (AVNeo) procedure has emerged as a versatile alternative strategy in the armamentarium of pediatric aortic valve reconstructions that are currently available. In this review article, the focus of the discussion will be on the various aortic valve repair procedures in the ped...

Post myocardial infarction ventricular septal rupture —protracted hemolysis due to missed additional ventricular septal defect
We report a case of protracted hemolysis after device closure of VSR requiring surgical intervention. During device retrieval and patch closure, a muscular band was observed dividing the VSR into two, allowing residual shunt across the second defect. Hydrodissection in chronic pulmonary endarterectomy
AbstractIn our series of surgical pulmonary endarterectomies done for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, we have incorporated the principle of hydrodissection with the aid of a carbon dioxide (CO2) mist blower which is routinely used for off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgeries. This added method of endarterectomy will help to achieve optimum clearance of thrombic load with basic cardiac surgical instruments. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Left ventricular assist device exchange: a review of indications, operative procedure, and outcomes
AbstractThe use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) is intended to treat patients with end-stage heart failure. Owing to technological advances, these devices are becoming more durable. However, LVADs may need to be exchanged when complications arise and heart transplantation is not possible. Indications for LVAD exchange (LVADE) include device thrombosis, device infections, and pump component failure. LVADE has historically been associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. In this review, we discuss the indications of LVADE, the decisional and technical aspects during surgery, and outcomes. (Source: Indi...

Proportion of right ventricular failure and echocardiographic predictors in continuous-flow left ventricular assist device: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe echocardiographic predictors of RVF after CF-LVAD placement are still uncertain. However, there seems to be a trend of statistical correlation between TAPSE, FAC, and RVGLS with RVF event after CF-LVAD placement. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Acute pulmonary artery thromboembolism in presence of large mobile right atrial thrombus and severe thrombocytopenia
AbstractAcute pulmonary embolism in presence of thrombocytopenia poses a challenging situation to manage. Concomitant presence of right atrial thrombus and thrombocytopenia will further complicate the situation. We hereby report a case of large right atrial thrombus with massive saddle bilateral pulmonary artery embolism with severe thrombocytopenia managed surgically with successful outcome. A large cardiac tuberculoma masquerading a malignant mass in a 15-year-old boy
Abstract We hereby present a case of large cardiac tuberculoma which was thought to be a malignant mass on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The present case highlights that high index of suspicion is necessary to diagnose this rare entity especially in tuberculosis-endemic areas, or in those who have relevant past history of this condition. Surgical revascularization strategies of CAD involving dual left anterior descending artery
AbstractDual left anterior descending artery (LAD) is not an uncommon coronary artery anomaly. Preoperative identification of this anomaly in patients with coronary artery disease is important to develop strategies to ensure complete revascularization of the LAD territory. From April 1996 through February 2022, more than 16,500 patients underwent isolated coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) by our team. Retrospective review of the angiographic and operative records of these patients revealed 85 cases with stenosis of the dual LAD system. The incidence of dual LAD in patients undergoing CABG is 0.51%. Among the 85 patient...

Open surgical replacement of the descending aorta: single-center experience
ConclusionsThis study showed that the elective open surgical replacement of the descending aorta can be achieved with excellent outcomes in terms of perioperative mortality and morbidity. Prosthetic graft is not a problem with open surgical descending aortic replacement, even in the long term. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)
