99mTc-Tilmanocept vs. Sulfur Colloid for Sentinel Node Biopsy for Melanoma in the Head and Neck
This study is a retrospective study, conducted at a single, tertiary care cancer center. Patients underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for head and neck cutaneous melanoma, using SC or TL, between October 2014 and February 2019. Differences in SLN identification rates and performance chara cteristics between the groups were examined using the Mann–Whitney, or Fisher’s exact test. Sixty patients underwent SLNB, of which 19 employed TL. There were no significant differences between SC vs. TL in operative duration (116 vs. 127 min,P = 0.97), radiation dose (530 vs. 547 μCi,P = 0.27), median number of SL...

Ghost Stoma Solving the Dilemma of Diversion After Anterior Resection: Surgical Technique Description and Experience from a Single Centre
AbstractAnastomotic leak is the most dreaded complication after anterior resection (AR). To do prophylactic diversion stoma or not is a matter of constant dilemma that most surgeons face. In such a situation, ghost stoma (GS) technique offers a middle path, wherein unnecessary prophylactic stomas can be avoided and at the same time ensuring that a diversion stoma can be created if need arises without the need of any major surgery or anaesthesia. Retrospective data of patients who underwent anterior resection with ghost stoma at our institute from January 2015 to December 2019 was analysed for clinical characteristics, oper...

Peritoneal Malignant Mesothelioma Metastasizing to Lymph Node in Young Male —a Case Report
AbstractPeritoneal malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm with a poor prognosis. We hereby report a case of a 20-year-old male, first diagnosed on biopsy with axillary lymph node metastasis. He presented with abdominal pain and axillary lymphadenopathy, with no history of asbestos exposure. CECT showed peritoneal thickening and ascites. Ascitic fluid cytology showed reactive morphology. The diagnosis of metastatic deposits of malignant mesothelioma was made on histopathology and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Tumor cells were immune-reactive for CK 5/6, calretinin, D2-40, and WT1 and negative for TTF1, CK 20, a...

Primary Angiosarcoma of Breast: a Case Series of Rare Disease
We report a case of PAB treated at our hospital along with 2 more cases of PAB we found on retrospective analysis. The basic criterion for inclusion in the study was the presence of histopathologically confi rmed primary angiosarcoma of the breast: graded into low (G1, G2) and high (G3) grades. Surgeons must be aware about its high systemic metastatic potential, atypical presentation, and diffuse nature of infiltration so that it will be diagnosed early, and undergo a margin negative excision with recon struction after a proper metastatic evaluation. From ChatGPT to Treatment: the Future of AI and Large Language Models in Surgical Oncology
AbstractThis paper explores the transformative potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) within the context of surgical oncology and outlines the foundational mechanisms behind these models. LLMs, such as GPT-4, have rapidly evolved in terms of scale and capabilities, with profound implications for their applications in healthcare. These models, rooted in the Generative Pretrained Transformer architecture, exhibit advanced natural language understanding and generation skills. Within surgical oncology, LLMs, when integrated into a Generalist Medical AI (GMAI) framework, hold great promise in offering real-time support throu...

Liver Transplantation for Nonresectable Colorectal Liver Metastases (CRLM)
AbstractTransplantation represents the most radical locoregional therapy through removal of the liver, associated vasculature and locoregional lymph nodes, and replacing it with an allograft. Recent evidence has demonstrated that transplantation for unresectable CRLM is feasible with acceptable post-transplant outcomes in a highly selected cohort of patients. Controversy exists regarding whether transplantation is an appropriate treatment for such patients, due to concerns regarding disease recurrence in the transplanted graft in an immunosuppressed recipient along with utilising a donor liver which are in short supply. Ex...

Synchronous Triple Malignancy of Esophagus, Pancreas, and Pyriform Sinus: A Prima Facie Report
We report such a case in a 71-year-old male with no genetic predisposition or family history of malignancy, presenting with three primary malignancies of the buccal mucosa, esophagus, and pancreas. Investigations revealed three histologically separate tumors in the buccal mucosa, esophagus, and pancreas. The patient was treated initially with a first-line combination of chemotherapy and later with a 2nd-line palliative chemotherapy. The prognosis of such patients is poor. Our patient is still on 2nd-line palliative chemotherapy without any major complications. (Source: Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Neoadjuvant Chemoradiation Followed by Surgery for Locally Advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma Esophagus: Demographics and Evaluation of Prognostic Factors at a Tertiary Care Center in India
We present our experience and inference of various factors associated with the same treatment and the prognostic influence of the same. A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 132 squamous cell carcinoma esophagus patients post neoadjuvant chemoradiation operated with curative intent  was carried out. The 2-year overall survival rate was 64.5%. A pathological complete response was achieved in 32.5% of patients and was the only factor that significantly determined overall survival (p = 0.048). Neoadjuvant chemoradiation before surgery for locally advanced squamous cell cancer of the esophagus remains the standard of care w...

Expression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and β-catenin in Colorectal Carcinoma and its Correlation with Tumor Grade and Stage
AbstractColorectal cancer (CRC) is considered the result of the cumulative effect of multiple mutations within the cell that allow it to escape growth control and regulatory mechanisms. EGFR overexpression has been suggested as a factor of poor prognosis in various cancers. β-catenin plays a role in the Wnt signaling pathway of colorectal cancers. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of two years comprising 20 colectomy specimens. Clinicopathological details were documented, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) for EGFR and β-catenin was performe d. EGFR-Brown membranous staining was observed; β-cat...

The “Watch and Wait” Method After Chemoradiotherapy for Rectal Cancer Requiring Abdominoperineal Resection
AbstractThe present study examined the therapeutic effects of preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (NACRT) and predictive factors for complete clinical remission, compared the prognosis and costs of abdominoperineal resection (APR) and the “watch and wait” method (WW), and evaluated the usefulness of WW. In our department, patients with stage II–III lower rectal cancer requiring APR receive NACRT. NACRT was performed as a preoperative treatment (52 Gy + S-1: 80–120 mg/day × 25 days). Eight weeks after the completi on of NACRT, rectal examination, endoscopic, computed tomography, and magnetic...
