Comparative study for assessment of functional outcome of intraarticular AO Type C distal humerus fractures treated by parallel plating
Conclusion: Parallel plating using olecranon osteotomy is an acceptable approach for this fracture, but due to inherent nature of this injury, it has its own set of complications which must be counseled before surgery and active participation of patient is required to obtain realistic expectations and goals for the future. Status of vitamin D and parathyroid hormone in patients scheduled to undergo orthopedic fracture management: A case-control study
Conclusion: This study gives us very important data regarding the prevalence of VDD and rise of PTH secondary to the former and this hormonal milieu in our body is an independent risk factor for increased incidence of fracture. (Source: Indian Journal of Orthopaedics)

Growing without pain: The noninvasive expandable prosthesis is boon for children with bone cancer, as well as their surgeons!
Conclusion: The noninvasive expandable prosthesis is an ideal implant for children undergoing limb salvage surgery for bone sarcoma who are expected to have more than 3 cm of limb length discrepancy at maturity. The initial high cost compared to a minimally invasive expandable implant can be recovered as there is no additional cost of lengthening. The small amounts of lengthening at more frequent intervals is more physiological as compared with the minimally invasive type where more lengthening is done to minimize the number of procedures. While the functional and oncological outcomes are comparable, this implant allows li...

Evaluation of healed status in tuberculosis of spine by fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography and contrast magnetic resonance imaging
Conclusions: FDG-PET/CT is more useful to demonstrate the healed status than MRI and is the only imaging to demonstrate healed status when MRI could not be performed due to metallic implants. All patients achieved healed status at variable length of ATT intake; hence TB spine should be treated by ATT till healed status (end-point of treatment) is demonstrated by FDG-PET/CT (absence of FDG uptake) or contrast MRI. Revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in the nonathlete population
Conclusions: The revision rate of primary ACL reconstruction of 5.9% in nonathletes and revision ACL reconstruction rate of 3.9% are similar to the reported revision rates of 2.9%–5.8% in athletic patients. Similar to athletes, suboptimal tunnel placement is the major contributor to failure in nonathletes also. (Source: Indian Journal of Orthopaedics)

A comparison of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on commonly used orthopaedic metal implant materials: An In vitro study
Conclusion: Cobalt-chromium was observed to have the lowest proclivity towards bacterial adherence compared to the other biomaterials tested. However, bacterial adhesion occurred with all the materials. Hence, it is necessary to further evaluate newer biomaterials that are resistant to bacterial adherence. Does rehabilitation before total knee arthroplasty benefit postoperative recovery ? A systematic review
Conclusion: Preoperative exercise program may be beneficial and is associated with a significant decrease in length of hospital stay. No conclusive evidence can be delineated from the literature with respect to clinical outcome measures. Well-designed randomized trials would strengthen this position. When and how to operate fragility fractures of the pelvis ?
Pol Maria Rommens, Charlotte Arand, Alexander Hofmann, Daniel WagnerIndian Journal of Orthopaedics 2019 53(1):128-137 Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) are an entity with an increasing frequency. The characteristics of these fractures are different from pelvic ring fractures in younger adults. There is a low energy instead of a high energy trauma mechanism. Due to a specific and consistent decrease of bone mineral density, typical fractures in the anterior and posterior pelvic ring occur. Bilateral sacral ala fractures are frequent. A new classification system distinguishes between four categories with increasing lo...

A modified weaver-dunn procedure with or without chip bone graft for the treatment of acromioclavicular joint separation
Conclusions: The modified Weaver-Dunn procedure (Group 1 and 2) provides a stable and strong reconstruction for the treatment of AC joint separation. In addition, this modified Weaver-Dunn procedure with chip bone graft (Group 2) may lead to same or more secure healing of the grafted CA ligament-bone than the same procedure without chip bone graft (P = 0.9737).
