Trichoscopy in alopecia areata and trichotillomania in skin of colour: A comparative study
Siddharth Mani, Aradhana Raut, Shekhar Neema, Manish Khandare, Prateksha Golas, Sunmeet Sandhu, Rohit Kothari, Gopalsing R Rajput, Bhavni OberoiIndian Journal of Dermatology 2023 68(1):78-84 Alopecia areata (AA) and trichotillomania (TTM) are the two common causes of localised non scarring alopecia. While AA is an autoimmune disorder, TTM is an impulse control disorder which makes the treatment of the two entities completely different. Trichoscopy is a non-invasive tool used to diagnose hair disorders, which not only is extremely helpful in diagnosing AA and TTM but also differentiates them from other hair disorders as we...

Hyperacute graft-versus-host disease of the skin following allogeneic stem cell transplantation: A paediatric case series
Gauri D Mahabal, Leni George, Dincy Peter, Meera Thomas, Biju George, Vikram Mathews, Aby Abraham, Alok Srivastava, Susanne PulimoodIndian Journal of Dermatology 2023 68(1):73-77 Hyperacute GVHD (HaGVHD) is a rare complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) occurring before engraftment, a syndrome commonly involving skin and/or gut and/or liver, with increased morbidity and mortality. Myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimes and mismatched donor transplants have an increased risk for HaGVHD. There is a higher chance of steroid-refractoriness and chronic GVHD in those who develop HaGVHD. There is limited...

Heparanase contributes to psoriatic lesions through crosstalk with IL-17 pathway
Chengyao Zhu, Yunqin Ren, Hongliang Yao, Bo Feng, Lunfei Liu, Min ZhengIndian Journal of Dermatology 2023 68(1):59-66 Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is considered by a network of immunocytes and cytokines. Among all, Th17 cells–derived IL-17 is a critical driving factor in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Recently, disruption of the extracellular matrix was found to be related to psoriasis progression. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of heparanase (HPSE) in psoriasis and the crosstalk with the IL-17 signalling pathway. Skin tissues from non-affected areas and psoriatic l...

The efficacy of moisturisers containing ceramide compared with other moisturisers in the management of atopic dermatitis: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis
This study aimed to compare the efficacy of moisturisers containing ceramide with other moisturisers for AD management. Searches were conducted systematically on PubMed, the Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Google Scholar for studies published from January 2012 to July 2022. Interventions and outcomes were compared in this study. Statistical analysis was performed with ReviewManager 5.4 software. Five articles met the eligibility and inclusion criteria. Three articles were meta-analyses on trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) outcomes and two articles were meta-analyses on SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SC...

Onychoscopy of nail lesions in dermatological disorders: A cross-sectional observational study
Conclusions: Onychocopy can minimize the need for biopsy by highlighting subtle changes and helps narrow down the differentials. It is potentially a diagnostic test of choice in younger children. Our study helped to grade the severity of connective tissue disorders and establish the benignity of melanonychia. Photographic documentation facilitates record-keeping. Clinicoetiological study of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis spectrum and the correlation of SCORTEN with prognosis
Conclusion: SCORTEN gave a significant estimation of mortality in SJS-TEN overlap patients, whereas it overestimated mortality in TEN patients. An increase in individual scores for the elevation of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in existing SCORTEN and the inclusion of new parameters like raised liver enzymes, thrombocytopenia, and pulmonary infiltrates aided in proposing a modified SCORTEN for the South Indian population. Further studies on a larger scale, are needed to validate the modified SCORTEN proposed by us. (Source: Indian Journal of Dermatology)

The efficacy and safety of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for lichen sclerosus: A meta analysis
Conclusions: The current limited evidence supports the efficacy and safety of ALA-PDT in treating LS. The adverse reactions included pain, swelling, redness and exfoliation which would decrease with the continuing sessions of treatment. Further high-qualified RCTs of large samples are necessarily needed. (Source: Indian Journal of Dermatology)
