The role of cone-beam computed tomography in the radiographic evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea: A review article
Imaging Sci Dent. 2023 Dec;53(4):283-289. doi: 10.5624/isd.20230119. Epub 2023 Nov 6.ABSTRACTThe apnea-hypopnea index is widely regarded as a measure of the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition characterized by recurrent episodes of apnea or hypopnea during sleep that induce airway collapse. OSA is a catastrophic problem due to the wide range of health issues it can cause, including cardiovascular disease and memory loss. This review was conducted to clarify the roles of various imaging modalities, particularly cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), in the diagnosis of and preoperative planning for OSA. Un...

Assessment of infection control in oral radiology during the COVID-19 outbreak: An international collaborative study
CONCLUSION: The adherence to infection control protocols in oral radiology was low even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may help improve the awareness of students and professionals, since oral radiology routines have the potential for transmitting COVID-19.PMID:38174034 | PMC:PMC10761298 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230141 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Convolutional neural networks for automated tooth numbering on panoramic radiographs: A scoping review
CONCLUSION: CNNs have demonstrated high performance in automated tooth numbering on panoramic radiographs. Future development of CNN-based models for this purpose should also consider different stages of dentition, such as the primary and mixed dentition stages, as well as the presence of various tooth conditions. Ultimately, an optimized CNN architecture can serve as the foundation for an automated tooth numbering system and for further artificial intelligence research on panoramic radiographs for a variety of purposes.PMID:38174035 | PMC:PMC10761295 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230058 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Bibliometric analysis and diagnostic efficacy of cone-beam computed tomography studies published in Imaging Science in Dentistry from 2011 to 2022
CONCLUSION: A steady increase was observed in publications related to CBCT, which are of both clinical and academic interest. The trends in these publications were analyzed, revealing that most are cross-sectional studies primarily exploring the capabilities of CBCT in diagnosing pathologies and/or changes in the oral and maxillofacial complex. These studies were typically classified as level 1 or 2 on the diagnostic efficacy scale.PMID:38174036 | PMC:PMC10761290 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230106 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Simple bone cyst recurred in adjacent areas: A case report
This report presents a radiological examination of a simple bone cyst that developed around the root of the mandibular first molar in a 36-year-old female patient. The cyst recurred in adjacent areas despite surgical treatment.PMID:38174037 | PMC:PMC10761292 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230703 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Pathologic conditions associated with impacted third molars: A retrospective study of panoramic radiographs in a Southern Brazilian population
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of pathologic conditions associated with impacted 3Ms was low. Male sex, lower 3M placement, horizontal or distoangular positioning, and incomplete root formation were associated with developmental pathoses, while lower tooth position, complete root formation, and partial eruption were related to acquired pathoses.PMID:38174038 | PMC:PMC10761288 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230036 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Effects of the cone-beam computed tomography protocol on the accuracy and image quality of root surface area measurements: An < em > in vitro < /em > study
CONCLUSION: Relative to CBCT protocols with voxel sizes of 0.15 mm and 0.3 mm, the protocols with a voxel size of 0.4 mm demonstrated inferior image quality at the apical levels. In spite of this, no significant discrepancies were observed in RSA measurements across the different CBCT protocols.PMID:38174039 | PMC:PMC10761297 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230090 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Sonographic assessment of carotid intima-media thickness in healthy young Thai adults
CONCLUSION: Both max-CIMT and mean-CIMT were approximately 0.4 mm. Plaque was observed in 4.97% of patients, with an average thickness of 1.5 mm. The most influential risk factors for increased CIMT were sex, age, and occupation.PMID:38174040 | PMC:PMC10761294 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230021 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)

Factors affecting the reduction rate of odontogenic cysts after decompression based on 3-dimensional volumetric analysis
CONCLUSION: Knowledge of the reduction rate of odontogenic cysts is vital for surgeons to evaluate the duration of decompression before enucleation and to determine a definitive treatment plan. Sex and initial lesion volume had significant effects on the reduction rate.PMID:38174041 | PMC:PMC10761289 | DOI:10.5624/isd.20230083 (Source: Imaging Science in Dentistry)
