Clinical Practice Guidelines on Ordering Echocardiography Before Hip Fracture Repair Perform Differently from One Another
ConclusionsIn patients requiring fixation of osteoporotic hip fractures, TTE can be useful for identifying pathologies that could directly change peri-operative management. Our data suggest that established CPGs can be safely used to identify which patients should undergo pre-operative TTE with low risk of missed pathology. (Source: HSS Journal)

The Clavicle Continues to Grow During Adolescence and Early Adulthood
ConclusionWe found substantial clavicular growth potential after age 18  years, when growth is thought to be nearly finished, as well as remodeling potential even up to age 25 years. Further research is needed, but our findings suggest that strategies for managing clavicle fracture in adults may not be applied universally to adolescents and young adults. (Source: HSS Journal)

Reporting Clinical Significance in Hip Arthroscopy: Where Are We Now?
ConclusionsNearly all studies evaluated met MCID, while fewer met SCB. Only half discussed these clinical measures. It is proposed that all future studies report both statistical and clinical significance as standard best practice. (Source: HSS Journal)

Prevalence and Treatment Outcomes of Hand and Wrist Injuries in Professional Athletes: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsBased on the available evidence, a large majority of hand and wrist injuries in professional athletes are treated conservatively. Athletes frequently return to preinjury levels of performance after surgery. Additionally, return to play after a hand injury appears to be faster than that after other bony injuries. Further research is needed into the impact of these injuries on athletic performance, as well as how surgical intervention affects validated patient-reported outcome measures in professional athletes. Permanent Spacers Are a Reliable Solution for Peri-prosthetic Shoulder Infection: A Systematic Review
ConclusionThe use of a permanent cement spacer is a reliable solution to PSI in low-demand, older patients with comorbidities, a population in whom it is desirable to avoid additional surgery. Our review found a high rate of infection eradication and moderate-to-good objective and subjective results. However, the overall level of evidence of included studies was very low, and higher-quality studies are needed to clarify the role of permanent spacers in the treatment of PSI. (Source: HSS Journal)

Misclassification of Case –Control Studies in the Orthopedic Literature Is Common: A Bibliometric Analysis
ConclusionsStudies reported in the orthopedic literature to have a case –control design frequently have another study design, and this pattern is consistent across subspecialties. Enhanced rigor in accurately defining study designs in orthopedics could be achieved through training and stricter review processes. (Source: HSS Journal)

Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: What Is the Evidence of Indirect Neural Decompression? A Systematic Review of the Literature
ConclusionClinical results indicate LLIF as an efficient technique in indirect neural decompression. Analysis of radiological data demonstrates the effectiveness of symmetrical foraminal decompression. Data regarding indirect decompression of central canal and lateral recess are inconclusive and contradictory. Bony stenosis appears as an absolute contraindication. The role of facet joint degeneration is unclear. This systematic review provides a reference for surgeons to define the potential and limitations of LLIF in indirect neural elements decompression. Monitoring Patient Recovery After THA or TKA Using Mobile Technology
ConclusionAssessing large amounts of post-TKA and post-THA step data using mobile technology is feasible. Completion rates were good, making the technology very useful for collecting frequent PROMs. Being unable to ensure that patients always carried their phones limited our analysis of the step counts. Etiology of Lumbosacral Radiculoplexopathy: Sacral Insufficiency Fracture on Magnetic Resonance Imaging
ConclusionsLSRP caused by SIF is an entity all radiologists should be cognizant of, especially in cases of otherwise unexplained radicular symptoms. The diagnosis of SIF can be helpful in cases involving concomitant multilevel lumbar spondylosis and neural foraminal stenosis. (Source: HSS Journal)
