Clinical Value and Role of miR-129-5p in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver
Disease
This study was to evaluate the expression of miR-129–5p in non-alcoholic
fatty liver (NAFLD) patients and its clinical value and explore its regulatory
effect on insulin resistance (IR). A total of 117 NAFLD patients and 110 healthy
controls were included. The levels of miR-129-5p were detected by qRT-PCR. To
assess the diagnostic value of miR-129-5p for NAFLD, the receiver operating
characteristic curve (ROC) was established. C57Bl/6 mice were supplied
with high-fat diet to establish NAFLD model. Intraperitoneal insulin tolerance
test (IPITT) was carr...

Late Recovery of Parathyroid Function after Total Thyroidectomy: A Case-Control Study
Horm Metab Res DOI: 10.1055/a-1608-1373The clinical characteristics of patients with postoperative hypoparathyroidism who recover parathyroid function more than 12 months after surgery have not been studied. We aimed to evaluate whether the intensity of replacement therapy with calcium and calcitriol is related to the late recovery of parathyroid function. We compared the demographic, surgical, pathological, and analytical features of two groups of patients: cases, i. e., late recovery patients (those who recover parathyroid function>1 year after thyroidectomy, n=40), and controls, i. e., patients with permanent hyp...

Downregulation of miR-519d-3p is Associated with Poor Outcomes and
Facilitates Tumor Progression in Papillary Thyroid Cancer by Regulating
FOXQ1
In conclusion,
miR-519d-3p was downregulated in PTC and associated with OS and PFS of patients.
MiR-519d-3p may be a tumor-inhibiting miRNA in PTC, and that
miR-519d-3p/FOXQ1 axis mediated PTC tumor progression from cell
proliferation, migration, and invasion in PTC cells. [...] Georg Thieme Verlag Rüdigerstraße 14, 70469 Stuttgart,

Effects of Melatonin Supplementation on Insulin Levels and Insulin
Resistance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled
Trials
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 616-624 DOI: 10.1055/a-1544-8181Insulin resistance (IR) is a pivotal process in various metabolic diseases. The
well-known treatment is lifestyle modification and medication therapy, which may
result in poor compliance and side effects. Melatonin has been suggested to have
a role in glucose metabolism, yet the results across studies have been
inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a systematic review to evaluate the
effects of melatonin supplementation on insulin levels and IR. We searched
PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Contro...

Cushing Syndrome is Associated with Increased Stage N2 Sleep and
Decreased SWS Partially Reversible After Treatment
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 608-615 DOI: 10.1055/a-1542-8816The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sleep parameters of patients
with Cushing syndrome (CS) at the time of diagnosis and 12-months after
treatment. Thirty four newly diagnosed patients with endogenous CS (17 with
ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma, 17 with adrenal CS) and 23 controls with
similar age were included in the study. Two polysomnography (PSG) recordings
were performed; one at the time of diagnosis and the other 12 months after
resolution of hypercortisolemia. Control group had only base...

Comparative Profiling of Salivary Cortisol and Salivary DHEA-S Among
Healthy Pregnant and Non-Pregnant Women
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 602-607 DOI: 10.1055/a-1551-3722During pregnancy, circulatory cortisol levels increase, remaining steady over the
second-third trimester. In contrast, profile of salivary cortisol during
pregnancy is debatable, more influenced by factors like time of sample
collection in the day. Circulatory DHEA-S decrease by at least 50% over
the second-third trimester of pregnancy. However, profile of salivary DHEA-S is
unclear. Objective was to determine changes in salivary cortisol and DHEA-S in
healthy pregnant women, compared to non-pregnant women d...

Metastatic Risk Profile of Microscopic Lymphatic and Venous Invasion
in Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In this study of 484 patients with medullary thyroid cancer who had≥5
lymph nodes removed at initial thyroidectomy, microscopic lymphatic and venous
invasion were significantly associated with greater primary tumor size (27.6 vs.
14.5 mm, and 30.8 vs. 16.2 mm) and more frequent lymph node
metastasis (97.0 vs. 25.9%, and 85.2 vs. 39.5%) and distant
metastasis (25.0 vs. 5.1%, and 32.8 vs. 7.3%). Prediction of
lymph node metastases by microscopic lymphatic invasion was better than
prediction of distant metastases by microscopic venous invasion regardi...

Climate Change and Obesity
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 575-587 DOI: 10.1055/a-1533-2861Global warming and the rising prevalence of obesity are well described challenges
of current mankind. Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic arose as a new
challenge. We here attempt to delineate their relationship with each other from
our perspective. Global greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil
fuels have exponentially increased since 1950. The main contributors to such
greenhouse gas emissions are manufacturing and construction, transport,
residential, commercial, agriculture, and land use cha...

Among Middle-Aged Healthy and Type 2 Diabetic Subjects
Horm Metab Res DOI: 10.1055/a-1534-2747Vitamin D deficiency is a major widespread health concern and is linked to a high
risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Thus, we have investigated the association
of vitamin D with various CVD risk markers. The present study comprises 90
control and 90 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects of both sexes (age
range, 30–50 years). The 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and CVD risk
markers including high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), monocyte
chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), intact parathyroid hormone (I-PTH),

Importance of Setting Up Reference Intervals and Multiple of Medians
(MoM)
Horm Metab Res DOI: 10.1055/a-1432-2225I was interested in the article of Kianpour et al. on reference intervals for thyroid
hormones during the first trimester of gestation from an area with sufficient iodine
level 1. The unavailability of data in this
population had triggered this study where 436 pregnant and 444 non-pregnant women
were recruited. I appreciate the great effort taken by the authors to recruit such a
large population for the study. Following screening as per exclusion criteria 291
pregnant women were eliminated and thus the data of 145 pregnant wa...

Impact of Clomiphene Citrate on the Steroid Profile in Dysmetabolic
Men with Low Testosterone Levels
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 520-528 DOI: 10.1055/a-1542-8763Clomiphene citrate (CC) in male hypogonadism increases testosterone (T) and
estrogen levels by stimulating pituitary gonadotropin release. Our group
confirmed these hormonal changes in a randomized, cross-over, double-blind trial
of CC versus placebo in addition to metformin, conducted in 21 obese
dysmetabolic men with low T levels. However, we hypothesize that based on its
mechanism of action, CC may directly or indirectly affect adrenal
steroidogenesis. The aim of this sub-study was to better understand th...

DHEAS and Differential Blood Counts as Indirect Signs of
Glucocorticoid Excess in Adrenal Non-Producing Adenomas
Horm Metab Res 2021; 53: 512-519 DOI: 10.1055/a-1539-6442The majority of incidentally discovered adrenal tumors are later characterized as
non-producing adrenocortical adenomas (NPA). We asked whether laboratory
abnormalities in parameters that reflect glucocorticoid action can be found in
patients with NPA despite their nature of being clinically unapparent. Since
glucocorticoids are potent immunosuppressants we studied blood counts and
differential blood counts along with corticotropin and dehydroepiandrostenedione
sulfate (DHEAS) blood concentrations, as well a...
