Radiotherapy prior to or after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionApplying RT prior to TACE provided better survival outcomes than TACE followed by RT for patients with HCC and PVTT, which may act as an optimized regional modality to further improve local control rates (Trial registration: ChiCTR ChiCTR2000033573.) (Source: Hepatology International)

Lusutrombopag for thrombocytopenia in Chinese patients with chronic liver disease undergoing invasive procedures
ConclusionsLusutrombopag was effective in raising PLT, diminishing platelet transfusion requirement, and documented a safety profile like the placebo in CLD and severe thrombocytopenia patients in a Chinese cohort undergoing elective invasive procedures. Chinese clinical trial registration number: CTR20192384. (Source: Hepatology International)

New progress towards elimination of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus in China
ConclusionThe available data on HBV EMTCT are sufficient to support the validation of the elimination of HBV mother –to-child transmission in China. (Source: Hepatology International)

Prevention of variceal rebleeding in cirrhotic patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma receiving molecularly targeted therapy: a randomized pilot study of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt versus endoscopic plus β-blocker
ConclusionsIn advanced HCC patients receiving TKIs and presented with variceal bleeding, the use of TIPS was associated with significant reduction in rebleeding, improved a higher adherence to TKIs therapy, and prolonged survival. (Source: Hepatology International)

Albumin, filamin-A and cytokeratin 19 help distinguish intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma from extrahepatic adenocarcinoma
ConclusionAlbumin ISH and IHC staining for filamin-A and CK19 showed distinct expression patterns between iCCA and extrahepatic adenocarcinomas from gallbladder, pancreas, and stomach. We developed iCCA-score that consisted of those three markers, and it showed better diagnostic performance than albumin ISH alone. (Source: Hepatology International)

Association of age at first birth and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in women: evidence from the NHANES
ConclusionsWomen with younger AFB have higher odds of NAFLD in later life. Policymakers should consider focusing on those with earlier AFB for screening and prevention of NAFLD. (Source: Hepatology International)

PIRO-CIC model can predict mortality and futility of care in critically ill cirrhosis patients in the intensive care unit
ConclusionsAssessment and stratification of CICs with the dynamic PIRO-CIC model could determine one-month mortality and futility in the first week. Targeted and aggressive management of coagulation, kidneys, sepsis, and severe systemic inflammation may improve outcomes of CICs.Graphical abstract (Source: Hepatology International)

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and liver function markers are associated with Crohn ’s disease but not Ulcerative Colitis: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionsIndividuals with MAFLD were at increased risk of developing IBD, especially CD, but not UC. Circulating levels of liver function biomarkers as the surrogate indicators of MAFLD were also associated with IBD risk. (Source: Hepatology International)

A proposal for T1 subclassification in hepatocellular carcinoma: reappraisal of the AJCC 8th edition
ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that tumor size would significantly impact the survival outcome of T1 HCC after surgery. Due to significantly worse survival, we proposed a subclassification within T1 HCC, T1c: solitary tumor  >  6.5 cm without vascular invasion, to further stratify those patients at risk. Further studies are mandatory to validate our findings. (Source: Hepatology International)

N-terminal propeptide of type 3 collagen-based sequential algorithm can identify high-risk steatohepatitis and fibrosis in MAFLD
ConclusionsThe new sequential algorithm reliably identifies liver inflammation and fibrosis in MAFLD, making it easier to exclude low-risk patients and recommending high-risk MAFLD patients for clinical trials and emerging pharmacotherapies. (Source: Hepatology International)

Etiology, outcome and prognostic indicators of acute liver failure in Asian children
ConclusionsOverall survival of PALF remained poor. High peak bilirubin and low GGT predict poor outcome of PALF. LIU score is a good model in predicting outcome of PALF and maybe useful in selecting children for emergency LT. (Source: Hepatology International)

Analysis of viral integration reveals new insights of oncogenic mechanism in HBV-infected intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma
ConclusionComparative analysis demonstrates numerous newly discovered mutational events in ICC and CHC resulting from HBV insertions in the host genome. Our study provides an in-depth biological and clinical insights into HBV-induced ICC and CHC. (Source: Hepatology International)
