Intraductal Papillary Neoplasia of Bile Duct: A Rare Liver Tumor
ConclusionIntrahepatic biliary papillomatosis is a rare tumor of the biliary ducts, both intrahepatic and extrahepatic. Surgical resection is considered the optimal treatment for biliary papillomatosis because of the risk of malignant transformation. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is a useful preoperative diagnostic examination that can show papillary lesions in the bile ducts. In patients without distant organ and lymph node metastasis, resection provides long-term survival. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Primary Hyperparathyroidism in a Predominantly Vitamin D Deficient Population: A Single Center Experience
ConclusionPrimary hyperparathyroidism continues to be mainly a symptomatic disease in the Kashmir Valley. There is a decreasing trend of symptomatic cases and an increasing number of asymptomatic cases with time. The level of 25(OH)D has no correlation with serum calcium, iPTH or tumor size in these patients. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine by Surgical Patients in a Pakistani Teaching Hospital
ConclusionMore than half of the patients in the study used CAM. Despite medical concerns regarding the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of CAM, its use amongst surgical patients is common. The surgical team should enquire specifically about CAM use during the pre-operative assessment and be aware of possible drug interactions with herbal remedies, and should inform the patients about potential side effects of CAM. The Management of Duodenal Perforation: Change Over Time. A Case Series and Literature Review
AbstractDuodenal perforation, which may occur with a variety of etiologies (i.e., peptic ulceration, trauma, iatrogenic, etc.) is a potentially life-threatening event. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is the most useful imaging technique for identifying duodenal perforation, although some cases may require surgical exploration for diagnosis. The choice of treatment depends on the cause of perforation, the timing of presentation, its location, the extent of the injury and the clinical condition of the patient. Conservative management appears to be feasible and may be successful in stable patients with sealed per...

Duplication of the Common Bile Duct Associated with an Abnormal Pancreatico-Bile Duct Junction. Case Report and Literature Review
We present one such case in a 7-year-old girl, where the proximal CBD divided into two separate channels for a short distance and re-united distally to open as a common channel into the second part of duodenum. The main pancreatic duct opened proximally into the medial limb of the anomalous CBD, forming an abnormal pancreatico-bile duct junction (APBDJ). According to the accepted classification, this is a Type Va CBD duplication. The patient also had cholelithiasis and calculi in the medial limb and distal common channel. Endosco pic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed, with removal of the gallstones, ...

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy for Duplicated Gallbladder
We report a rare case of gallbladder duplication in a 50-year-old female, with cholelithiasis in one champer and a free lumen of the other. US examination was suggestive of duplicate gallbladder, and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) was indicative of duplication, with separate cystic ducts. The patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Intraoperatively the gallbladder appeared to be a single lumen specimen, but two separate gallbladders and cystic ducts were identified post-operatively during fine dissection of the specimen.A high degree of awareness and detailed preoperative investigations are nece...

Framing the Preoperative Assessment of the Oncogeriatric Patient. The Surgeon ’s Point of View
AbstractElderly cancer patients constitute a steadily rising population and present a challenge for their physicians, who are confronted not only with medical questions, but also with ethical and social dilemmas. Oncogeriatric patients are underrepresented or excluded from clinical trials, especially in the field of surgery, resulting in a lack of evidencebased knowledge regarding their preoperative evaluation, treatment and follow-up. We therefore outline here a framework for the decision-making process, based on recognition of the problem, clarification of the relevant terms, and delineation of the challenges that need t...

The Stage of Colorectal Cancer in Surgical Patients in Greece
Conclusions: The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients in this series were in agreement with the current bibliographical evidence. Further interpretation of the results highlights the need for increased participation in screening programs, the creation of specialized cancer centers of excellence and the establishment of a national cancer database, in order to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of CRC.
