The Contribution of Petrus Camper to the Anatomy and Aetiology of Inguinal Hernias
AbstractOne of the most intriguing eras in the evolution of hernia surgery is the second half of the 18th century, when surgeons interested, also, in anatomy, started to publish studies on the abdominal wall and the inguinal canal. Petrus Camper (1722 –1789), a well-known “praelector anatomiae” of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons and Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Universities of Franeker, Amsterdam, and Groningen, performed dissections on corpses of children and adults to study the anatomy and aetiology of inguinal hernias. He reje cted the prevailing concept of that time that a hernia was caused by “a rup...

Prevalence, Diagnostic Imaging and Treatment Strategies of Intrathyroid Parathyroid Adenomas in Patients Surgically Treated for Hyperparathyroidism: A Review of the Literature
ConclusionsITPAs are a rare cause of hyperparathyroidism that should not be neglected. Preoperative imaging is useful in the localisation of ITPAs. Bilateral cervical exploration followed by tumour enucleation or thyroid lobectomy is considered the best surgical strategy. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Laparoscopic Repair of Primary and Secondary Epigastric Hernias. Technical Considerations of the IntraPeritoneal On Lay Mesh + Defect Closure (IPOM-Plus Technique)
We present our experiences with the laparoscopic repair of primary and secondary (incisional) epigastric hernias that occur in the vicinity of bony structures.Material and MethodsIn our institute, we retrospectively reviewed 51 patients with primary and secondary epigastric hernias from 2002 to 2016. The European Hernia Society guidelines were used for classifying these hernias. Laparoscopic dissection of the falciform ligament, intracorporeal suturing of the defect and intraperitoneal composite mesh onlay placement was performed in all patients.ResultsThere were 32 males and 19 females with a mean age of 40 years and a me...

The Minimum Length of Colonic Segment to be Removed for Adequate Lymph Node Dissection in Colorectal Cancer
ConclusionThe minimum length of bowel segment that needs to be removed in order to dissect 12 lymph nodes varies depending on the operation type, being 21 cm for a conventional right hemicolectomy and as high as 31 cm for a laparoscopic right hemicolectomy. The removal of a 16-cm bowel segment will suffice in a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy, while a low anterior resection requires a minimum 24-cm bowel segment to be removed. A Report of Three Cases of Cystic Adrenal Masses. Incidence, Presentation and Management. A Case Series with a Short Review of the Literature
ConclusionWe could conclude that the evaluation and classification of benign adrenal vascular tumours and cysts remain challenging because of their rarity and overlapping morphological features. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Pyramidal Lobe Prevalence, Preoperative Detection and Clinical Importance: A Literature Review
ConclusionsThe pyramidal lobe is a normal component of thyroid anatomy. Intraoperative pyramidal lobe identification and resection is mandatory, in order to prevent disease recurrence. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Left Mini Thoracotomy as a Method for Epicardial Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Placement in a Child. An Effective Alternative to the Transvenous Approach
This report describes the technique used at Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center for the epicardial placement of an ICD system with a transvenous ICD coil placed in the posterior pericardium via a left thoracotomy, producing a stable location and excellent coil-to-can vector for successful defibrillation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in Greece. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Internal Hernia through a Congenital Peritoneal Defect in the Pouch of Douglas causing Small Bowel Obstruction
AbstractAn internal hernia is defined as the protrusion of visceral content, most commonly the small bowel, through a normal or abnormal peritoneal or mesenteric aperture within the abdominal cavity and the pelvis. An internal hernia may either be congenital or acquired in aetiology. These hernias can trap and/or twist small bowel, resulting in bowel obstruction. We herein describe an extremely rare case of a young female who presented with small bowel obstruction secondary to an incarcerated internal hernia caused by a peritoneal defect in the pouch of Douglas. Skull Base Defect Associated with Spontaneous Intraventricular Pneumocephalus in a Patient with Ventriculo-peritoneal Shunt
We report the case of an 81-year-old male patient who presented severe spontaneous intraventricular pneumocephalus after two months of ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for adult chronic hydrocephalus associated with neurologic progressive deterioration and a recent history of hypoacousia. During the process of diagnosis, on simple and fine-cut Computerized Tomography a porencephalic cyst was discovered in association with an osteodural defect in the petrous bone. A surgical revision was scheduled and an approach to the tegmen tympani was performed, covering the defect with fasciomuscular flap and fibrin glue. There wer...

The Importance of Resilience and Resolution in the COVID-19 Era. A Surgeon ’s View
ConclusionCovid-19 pandemic has caused a great suffering and turmoil in our society as well as major disruptions in health care delivery. The financial impact on hospitals and universities, biomedical research, and education will be felt for years to come. Despite the broad impact of the pandemic, as surgeons, we should focus on creating novel strategies to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on our lives and our patients. Situs Inversus Totalis: Operating on the Mirror Image
ConclusionSafe laparoscopic cholecystectomy is feasible in patients with situs inversus provided the condition is diagnosed including the anatomical variations prior hand and the surgery is performed by an experienced laparoscopic surgeon. Moreover, every laparoscopic surgeon must be well conversant with the use of his/her left hand as well. Nowadays, robotic minimal access surgery can be a better solution to this problem. Initial Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer through Colonoscopy or Emergent Surgery-Clinicopathological Features that Support Early Screening
ConclusionsNearly 95% of the patients were diagnosed after symptom development and had more advanced disease. The contribution of colonoscopy in prompt CRC diagnosis (asymptomatic tumours) is crucial and well-organised screening programs should be applied in the general population.
