The Patient Experience After Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection
There is considerable burden of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), yet research is limited on the experience and impact of SCAD from the patient perspective. This literature review sought to describe the current state of the literature on the patient experience of SCAD and consequences for patients following a SCAD event from the patient perspective. To better understand how people ’s experiences of SCAD affect their wellbeing, quality of life, lifestyles, and identity, and what would be useful from the patient perspective, an integrativ...

Intracranial Atherosclerosis Increases the Risk of Postoperative Stroke After Cardiac Surgery: A Review and Meta-Analysis
Postoperative stroke is a devastating complication of cardiac surgery with high morbidity, mortality, and health care cost. Extracranial carotid atherosclerosis (ECAS) is a known risk factor for stroke; however, the impact of intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) remains unclear. To our knowledge, this is the first literature review of ICAS in cardiac surgery. We aimed to assess the prevalence, association with postoperative stroke, and perioperative management of ICAS in cardiac surgery. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

3D Printed Cardiac Models as an Adjunct to Traditional Teaching of Anatomy in Congenital Heart Disease —A Randomised Controlled Study
This study aims to explore the influence of 3D printed cardiac models as a teaching aid for nurses and paediatric trainees. We hypothesise that using 3D models as an adjunct to didactic teaching methods improves knowledge and confidence levels of participants, regardless of their cardiology experience. Recurrent Valve Frame Infolding in the 34mm Self-Expanding Medtronic Evolut Pro+ Transcatheter Valve System: A  Single Centre Experience
We report the incidence of VFI in a small group of patients with highly calcified and extra-large aortic annuli, who underwent implantation of the newer generation 34mm Medtronic Evolut Pro+ (EP+) valve system. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Variability in Contemporary Heparin Prescription and Activated Clotting Time Monitoring During Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: Call for Up-To-Date Evidence-Based Guidelines
Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is the preferred anticoagulant agent in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures for minimising the risk of thrombotic complications. Because of the narrow therapeutic range of UFH, some society guidelines have advocated the use of the activated clotting time (ACT) test to monitor anticoagulation intensity during PCI to reduce thrombotic and bleeding complications. We aimed to assess the current practice of UFH prescription and its monitoring in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Unilateral Superior Vena Cava (SVC) Syndrome in an Infant With Double SVC
Double superior vena cava (DSVC) is a congenital anatomical variant consisting of a normal right SVC and persistent left SVC (PLSVC). DSVC occurs in up to 90% of cases of PLSVC, of which a bridging innominate vein is present in 30% [1]. Obstruction of upper body systemic venous drainage, SVC syndrome, generally manifests as bilateral facial, neck or upper limb swelling, orthopnoea, cough, and conjunctival suffusion. Unilateral SVC syndrome is a rare subtype although it has been described in cases of innominate vein obstruction [2]. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Low Transvalvular Flow Rate in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Is a Predictor of Mortality: The TFR-TAVI Study
Transvalvular flow rate (TFR) represents a better reflection of transvalvular flow than the stroke volume index (SVi), and has recently emerged as a useful prognostic tool in patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement. There is a paucity of data investigating the role of TFR and its relationship with other clinical or echocardiographic factors in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Rationale and Design of the Cessation Of Pharmacotherapy In Recovered Chemotherapy-induced cardioToxicity (COP-RCT): A Pilot Study
Cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) is a well-recognised complication of cancer treatment. Treatment of CTRCD involves cardioprotective therapy (CPT) which can lead to a recovery of CTRCD with normalisation of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). As a result, there are potentially millions of cancer survivors with recovered CTRCD on CPT. Cardioprotective therapy can be associated with an undesirable long-term pill burden, financial costs, and side effects. Cancer survivorship is anticipated to increase significantly by the end of this decade. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Sex Differences in Pharmacotherapy and Long-Term Outcomes in Patients With Ischaemic Heart Disease and Comorbid Left Ventricular Dysfunction
Left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and ischaemic heart disease (IHD) are common among women. However, women tend to present later and are less likely to receive guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) compared with men. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Definitions and Pitfalls in the Diagnosis of Atrioventricular Block
The widespread use of disparate definitions of atrioventricular block has created important diagnostic problems. Adherence to the correct definitions provides a logical and simple framework for clinical evaluation. This review focuses on the clinical importance of the definitions in the diagnosis of the various types of atrioventricular (AV) block and the associated diagnostic pitfalls. Letter to the Editor regarding: “Outcomes Following Triple Cardiac Valve Surgery Over 17-years: A Multicentre Population-Linkage Study.” by Cheng et al., Heart Lung Circ. 2023;32(2):269–77
We have read the article "Outcomes Following Triple Cardiac Valve Surgery Over 17-Years: A Multicentre Population-Linkage Study" by Cheng et  al. [1] with considerable interest and respect for the authors' diligence in conducting the research. We concur with the authors' conclusion that the number of triple valve surgery (TVS) cases and the proportion of survivorship have increased due to advances in operative techniques and postoperati ve management. However, We would like to offer a few suggestions to enhance the content of the article. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Natriuretic Peptides and Echocardiography: When We Use Tests to Guide Testing
Impressive advances have been made in recent years in the treatment of chronic ambulatory heart failure (HF) with use of novel therapies for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) estimated to add 6.3 additional life-years for a 55-year-old patient [1]. Identification of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors as a beneficial therapy for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is also likely to translate into improved clinical outcomes for future HFpEF patients [2]. The Race to Improve Care for Athletes with Atrial Fibrillation
The lifetime risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) is approximately 37% after the age of 55 years but increases with the accumulation of cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes [1]. Lifestyle behaviours that reduce the development of these risk factors, including physical activity, are associated with lower risk of incident AF [2]. It is, therefore, of interest that participation in endurance sports is associated with increased risk of AF, despite lower overall prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.
