A longitudinal analysis of the impact of the local tobacco retail availability and neighbourhood deprivation on male smoking behaviours in Shanghai, China
Health Place. 2024 Jan 4;85:103171. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103171. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSome evidence from Western high-income countries suggests local tobacco retail availability and neighbourhood deprivation may influence smoking behaviours. However, this assertion has not been considered in China, where 44% of males continue to smoke. Data were analysed from Chinese males (n = 2054) who participated in Waves 3-5 (2009-2015) of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey by linking information on tobacco retail availability (estimated through population weighted Kernel Density of tobacco retail...

Vitality and nature in psychiatric spaces: Challenges and prospects for 'healing architecture' in the design of inpatient mental health environments
Health Place. 2024 Jan 4;85:103169. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103169. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHistorically, nature has been considered central to healing and recovery in institutional mental health settings, with inpatient spaces designed to mirror the restorative forces nature may afford. Within contemporary healthcare architecture, the discourse surrounding nature's role has once again become prominent, especially in the concept of 'healing architecture'. While the literature on 'healing architecture' primarily considers how to connect recovery to nature through interventions in the built environment, less in...

Examining the role of the diaspora in addressing the interconnections between human health and environmental change: The case of northern Senegalese communities
This article examines the motivations and practices through which Senegalese diasporas engage with the health system in their origin country and what barriers they face in their interventions. The results of the migration-environment-health nexus are critically discussed with a political ecology approach. We found that households and villages with a critical number of members abroad, and with strong political and/or international networks, are better off and less exposed to health risks in the face of adverse extreme climate impacts.PMID:38168576 | DOI:10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103172 (Source: Health and Place)

The mediating role of neighborhood social cohesion and trust in the relationship between childhood material hardship and adolescent depression
DISCUSSION: Results suggest that neighborhood conditions played a role in mediating the association between childhood material hardship and adolescent depression. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to policy and practice.PMID:38157741 | DOI:10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103162 (Source: Health and Place)

Parenthood, spatial temporal environmental exposure, and leisure-time physical activity participation: Evidence from a micro-timescale retrospective longitudinal study
This study contributes to the theorizing of an integrated social-environmental model for health and wellbeing by extending the ISEM from the life span to the micro-timescale and also by highlighting the importance of temporality in environmental exposure and health studies. It also contributes to the spatial temporal behavioral perspective of time geography literature by clarifying multiple pathways through which social and spatiotemporal environmental factors could interact and jointly affect health behaviors at a micro-timescale. This study contributes to the literature on parenting and LTPA decline by enriching and deep...

The interplay between air pollution, built environment, and physical activity: Perceptions of children and youth in rural and urban India
Health Place. 2023 Dec 20;85:103167. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103167. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of physical inactivity as a contributor to non-communicable disease risk in children and youth is widely recognized. Air pollution and the built environment can limit participation in physical activity and exacerbate non-communicable disease risk; however, the relationships between perceptions of air pollution, built environment, and health behaviours are not fully understood, particularly among children and youth in low and middle-income countries. Currently, there are no studies capturing how child and yout...
