Does the neighborhood built and social environment reduce long-term care costs for Japanese older people? The JAGES2010-2019 cohort study
This study's key findings reveal significant relationships between neighborhood environment elements and LTC costs and can be used to support developments in urban design to support healthy aging and reduced LTC costs.PMID:38479102 | DOI:10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103223 (Source: Health and Place)

Spatial accessibility and equity of residential care facilities in Beijing from 2010 to 2020
This study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation in the supply and demand of RCFs, applies a Gaussian two-step floating catchment area method with a multi-level search radius to measure the spatial accessibility of RCFs in Beijing in 2010 and 2020, and evaluates the equity of spatial accessibility. The results show that the elderly population was decentralized from the central urban area to New Urban Development Area. However, the distribution of RCF beds shows further agglomeration towards the central urban area. The accessibility of residential care resources in the central urban area and New Urban Development Area has i...

Exploring the impacts of neighborhood disadvantage on Medicare beneficiaries' early COVID-19 vaccine uptake
Health Place. 2024 Mar 8;86:103221. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103221. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA variety of factors influenced the American public's experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic and initial availability and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines. To examine variation in early COVID-19 vaccine uptake based on neighborhood disadvantage along with individual sociodemographic and health characteristics, we used Spring 2021 data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), a nationally representative, longitudinal survey of the Medicare population conducted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. ...

Before-school physical activity patterns among adolescents using accelerometer and GPS data
This study aimed to examine: a) adolescents' PA levels across various locations before school (6:00am - school start), b) contributions of before-school PA to daily PA and PA guidelines, and c) correlates of location-specific before-school PA. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using adolescents' (n = 148, mean age 14.7) accelerometer and GPS data. Adolescents averaged 9.7 min in before-school moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), representing substantial contributions to daily activity. Most MVPA occurred away from home and school. Significant correlates included segment duration, age, socio-economic status, and PA self-e...

Dynamic greenspace exposure, individual mental health status and momentary stress level: A study using multiple greenspace measurements
Health Place. 2024 Mar 5;86:103213. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103213. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious research on the relationship between greenspace exposure and mental health has largely taken a residence-based approach to exposure assessment, ignoring the dynamic nature of people's daily movements. Moreover, most studies evaluated greenspace from an overhead perspective, whereas an eye-level perspective could potentially offer a more comprehensive understanding of individuals' encounters with greenspaces. Based on our survey in two communities in Hong Kong (Sham Shui Po and Tin Shui Wai), we captured people...

Power, intersectionality and stigma: Informing a gender- and spatially-sensitive public health approach to women and gambling in Great Britain
Health Place. 2024 Feb 29;86:103186. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103186. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn Britain more men participate in gambling than women, although the gender gap is narrowing; and online gambling is increasing among women and men. Gambling practices differ between men and women but also between different groups of women, with evidence that younger women are diversifying to gamble in different ways from older women. Complex and powerful spatial, socio-cultural and economic forces shape women's experiences of gambling, the problems gambling may cause, and wider societal efforts to minimise these harm...

Are Spanish adolescents who actively commute to and from school more active in other domains? A spatiotemporal investigation
We examined the association between mode of commuting to/from school (i.e., walking, multimodal, and motorized-vehicle) and movement behaviours in several space-time domains (i.e., total day, home, school, transport, and other locations). Walking to and/or from school was associated with higher MVPA in all space-time domains except home, where no associations were found. After subtracting commuting time to/from school from total day domain, the associations in favour of walking to/from school were maintained compared to those using other commuting modes, and in transport domain these associations dissipated. The study sugg...
