Regional and neighbourhood-based variation in three types of vaccine attitude in Britain
This study investigates the geographic patterning of attitudes towards vaccination in Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). Using survey data from the 2018 Wellcome Monitor linked to lower super output areas and NUTS2 regions, this study provides evidence that negative attitudes regarding the risk of side-effects from vaccination and regarding the efficacy of vaccination are correlated with higher levels of local deprivation. While previous research has highlighted associations between vaccine uptake and deprivation for a variety of reasons, this study specifically contends that particular individualised types of caution...

Structural racism and geographic access to food retailers in the United States: A scoping review
Health Place. 2023 Aug 7;83:103089. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2023.103089. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis scoping review summarized findings and key measures from U.S.-based studies that 1) examined associations between geographic indicators of structural racism (e.g., redlining, racial segregation) and access to food retailers (e.g., supermarkets, convenience stores) or 2) documented disparities in access by neighborhood racial/ethnic composition. In 2022, relevant scientific literature was reviewed using Covidence software. Independent reviewers examined 13,069 citations; 163 citations advanced to the full-text revi...

The social contagion of prosocial behaviour: How neighbourhood blood donations influence individual donation behaviour
This study examines to what extent social contagion within neighbourhoods - changing behaviour in response to the behaviour of others - affects repeated blood donation behaviour. We draw on longitudinal survey and register data from a representative sample of blood donors in the Netherlands from 2007 to 2014 (N = 15,090). Using a panel data model and an instrumental variable approach, we find that donors are positively affected by donations made by other donors living in their neighbourhood. This effect does not seem to be mediated by normative or informational social influence. Exploratory analysis further attributes this...
