The association between serum vitamin D levels and urticaria: a meta-analysis of observational studies.
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that patients with urticaria had a lower Vitamin D level than healthy controls. Vitamin D deficiency rather than insufficiency has a positive relationship with urticaria. However, larger-scale studies over alonger duration of treatment are needed to confirm this conclusion. What's new in the treatment of eczemas.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study has shown that the treatment of chronic hand eczema and contact eczema with a medical device administered twice a day for three weeks, following a one week treatment in combination with a topical corticosteroid, is effective in decreasing the burden of symptoms and well tolerated. To confirm our data, further controlled trials are warranted in order to explore the efficacy and tolerability of Dexyane Med in different types of eczema. Management of mycoses in daily practice.
Authors: Drago L, Micali G, Papini M, Piraccini BM, Veraldi S Abstract The guideline recommendations, albeit founded on thorough reviews of clinically relevant literature data, are often not immediately adaptable to everyday life. Considering the marked heterogeneity of superficial mycoses, each of them requires specific management in a real life context; in all cases diagnostic confirmation is required with microscopic and culture examination. In tinea capitis oral therapy is necessary (minimum six weeks) and should be continued until clinical and, above all, mycological healing. In cases of tinea corporis, cruris...

Uncaria tomentosa.
Authors: Della Valle V Abstract Uncaria tomentosa (U. tomentosa) or uña de gato, a species of vine of Rubiaceae family, was used from centuries in various medical conditions. Although there are no randomized controlled trials or published human outcome studies, some conditions reportedly improved by U. tomentosa include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, prostatitis, viral illnesses and cancer (acting as a non-specific immunomodulantign agent) and it may also have potential as an immunomodulating adaptogen in cellular aging. The understanding of some specific mechanisms of molecular action leads to the de...

Skin metastasis: review with conceptual and practical guide.
Authors: Dittmer MR, Liu V Abstract Of the outward manifestations of visceral malignancy, cutaneous metastases are of particular interest for their impact on identification, prognosis, and management of the primary tumor. Their diagnosis is often challenging and requires high clinical suspicion. The infrequency and clinicopathologic variability of cutaneous metastases can impede their recognition by physical exam and even histopathology. This review offers a practical approach to judicious utilization of the full repertoire of clinical and pathologic data in precise characterization of metastases to the skin. Highl...

New formulation for topical treatment of onychomycoses.
Authors: Difonzo EM, Scarfì F, Galeone M Abstract BACKGROUND: In order to treat onychomycosis, topical and systemic medications are available. The choice of a systemic or topic treatment depends on numerous factors, such as patient's age, the presence of comorbidity, responsible fungal species, the clinical form of onychomycosis, its location (fingernails or toenails), the number of nails affected and the percentage of the nail plate infected. As for topical medications, given that nail plate has an insufficiently permeable structure, it is necessary to use appropriate formulae that create in the surface of ...

Current standards of surgical management in primary melanoma.
Authors: Perez MC, Orcutt ST, Zager JS Abstract Melanoma accounts for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths, and its incidence continues to rise worldwide. While advanced disease has historically been associated with poor long-term survival, early-stage disease has a favorable prognosis and therefore, early diagnosis is paramount. Resection of primary melanoma requires a balance of maximizing oncological outcome while minimizing morbidity. Wide excision with 1-2 cm margins, depending on depth of the tumor, is the standard of care for surgical treatment of primary, invasive melanoma. Sentinel lymph node biopsy ...

Subtypes such as hypertrophic and bullous lichen planus and lichen planus pigmentosus have been described. Treatment can be challenging, and prospective controlled studies are lacking. Corticosteroids remain the major options for topical and systemic treatment, although some non-steroidal options exist. In addition, we are witnessing an underestimation of dermatology as a specialty around the world, which is accepted as an ambulatory specialty on the border of cosmetology and beautification. However, recognizing specific cutaneous clinical signs can facilitate timely diagnosis of various systemic infections and neoplastic diseases. Invisible dermatoses from the perspective of the dermatopathologist. Original observations and novel concepts.
Authors: Tomasini C Abstract The phrase 'invisible dermatoses' has been used in two different contexts: 1) Invisible dermatoses to the clinician, i.e., diseases with no significant clinical features, 2) invisible dermatoses to the pathologist. These latter comprise a wide spectrum of entities which present with definite and obvious clinical features, but subtle or hidden histological features and are therefore "invisible" histologically. Diagnosis of such diseases represents a great challenge to both the dermatologist and dermatopathologist. The list of such diseases, originally comprising only few entiti...
