An extensive nevus of Ota with oro-buccal involvement: a case review and proposal of a new classification system.
Authors: Tas B Abstract Nevus of Ota (NO) also known as nevus fuscoceruleus ophthalmomaxillaris or oculodermal melanocytosis is a rare hamartoma. It is usually characterized by unilateral, patchy and speckled, blue/gray or brown macules on the forehead and periocular area. Here, we report a rare case of NO with oro-buccal involvement, which is an unusual condition. The patient was presented due to the rarity of oro-buccal involvement, extensive and remarkable expression of the lesions, and in order to propose a more comprehensive and neuroanatomy based classification system. Vitamin D and the skin: what should a dermatologist know?
Authors: Bergqvist C, Ezzedine K Abstract Although first discovered in 1931, Vitamin D has seen an increased interest in the scientific community over the past decades, including the dermatology field. Vitamin D promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption; however, the actions of vitamin D are not confined to bone. Indeed, there is now overwhelming and compelling scientific data that Vitamin D plays a crucial role in a plethora of cellular function and in extra-skeletal health. Except for fatty fish livers, very few foods naturally contain vitamin D; and the major source of vitamin D comes from skin exposure to sunl...

A rare and severe cutaneous adverse effect of telaprevir: drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms.
We report a case of DRESS due to telaprevir. A 64-year-old Caucasian man with chronic hepatitis C developed a progressive diffuse, painful maculopapular exanthema with fever, facial edema, lymphadenopathy at week 11 of chronic hepatitis C therapy with telaprevir, Peg-Interferon alfa-2a, and ribavirin. He had no exposures to any other medications. He presented an eosinophilia (up to 6.29 X 109 cells/L), skin biopsy was consistent with a drug reaction. The HCV treatment was stopped and methylprednisolone 0.75 mg/kg/day was started. Cutaneous and systemic symptoms had a rapid resolution in few days. Telaprevir can activate se...

Vitamin D in trichology: a comprehensive review of the role of Vitamin D and its receptor in hair and scalp disorders.
Authors: Damiani G, Conic R, Orlando G, Zampetti A, Marinello E, Piai M, Linder MD Abstract Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of various biological systems. Besides its well known function in calcium and phosphate metabolism, it plays a major role in pathophysiology of skin and adnexa. Indeed, Vitamin D, through its receptor (VDR), decreases keratinocyte proliferation, improve their differentiation and modulate both cutaneous innate (antimicrobial activity and antigen presentation)and adaptative immunity (T and B lymphocyte function). The mainteintenance of normal hair is dependent on...

Overview on the treatment of Lyme disease in pregnancy.
Authors: Conforti C, Vezzoni R, Retrosi C, Longone M, Corneli P, Magaton-Rizzi G, Nan K, Di Meo N, Zalaudek I Abstract Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness, which is tipically caused by Borrelia Burgdoferi. Over time, a typical Borreliosis skin reaction takes shape, i.e. the formation of an annular erythema that tends to expand centrifugally with erythematous edges whose diameter can reach up to 20 cm. The symptoms of Lyme disease are not only cutaneous but there may be a systemic involvement. Obviously, this disease can also affect pregnant women and for this reason this review aims to summarize the main ways of t...

Dupilumab for atopic dermatitis. Evidence to date.
Authors: Rodrigues MA, Nogueira M, Torres T Abstract Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic, pruritic inflammatory dermatosis. The inflammatory response is characterized by a T helper 2 (Th2) immune response phenotype. Topical therapy is the main treatment in mild-to-moderate AD, but many cases of moderate-to-severe require systemic treatments. Dupilumab is the first biologic approved for the treatment of adults with moderate-to-severe AD. It inhibits IL-4 and IL-13 signaling pathways and reduces Th2 response. Clinical trials have demonstrated significantly improved clinical and patient-reported outcomes. The a...
