Sexual behaviours and their associated factors among young people in the Dodowa Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (DHDSS) in Ghana
CONCLUSION: Risky sexual behaviour is high among young people in the Dodowa HDSS. Therefore, interventions that promote safer sexual practices and help young people make timely decisions on their sexual and reproductive health care needs are required.FUNDING: No funding was obtained for this paper.PMID:38322746 | PMC:PMC10630037 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.6 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Obstetric referral processes and the role of inter-facility communication: the district-level experience in the Greater Accra region of Ghana
CONCLUSION: Facilities had varying levels of availability of infrastructure, protocols, guidelines, services, equipment, and logistics for managing obstetric referrals. Enhanced inter-facility communication for obstetric referrals which engages health workers and provides requisite tools, can facilitate an efficient referral process for desired outcomes.FUNDING: This study was funded by the WHO/TDR Postdoctoral grant number B40347 to the NMIMR.PMID:38322747 | PMC:PMC10630038 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.7 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

The first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the ECOWAS region
CONCLUSION: We learn that the context of COVID-19 is specific to each country. This analysis shows the importance of better understanding each country's response. During this first year of the pandemic, the problem of variants of concern and the vaccination were not posed.FUNDING: The study was funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) under CATALYSE project.PMID:38322748 | PMC:PMC10630033 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.8 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

An assessment of Nigeria's health systems response to COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: Interventions of state and non-state actors have strengthened the health systems to some extent. However, more needs to be done to sustain these gains and make the health system resilient to absorb unprecedented shocks.FUNDING: IDRC Canada Grant # 109479-001.PMID:38322737 | PMC:PMC10630045 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.9 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Urban-rural differences in health service-related factors associated with male involvement in family planning services in Abia State, Southeastern Nigeria
CONCLUSION: Health service-related factors associated with male involvement varied between the urban and rural settings. Stakeholders should target addressing health service-related factors by types of settlement while designing family planning programs targeting men.FUNDING: No funding was obtained for this study.PMID:38322738 | PMC:PMC10630032 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.12 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Health policy and systems research capacity development to support maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health in West and Central Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Lessons for health policy and systems research capacity building in LMIC include the potential of South-South partnerships, the need for dedicated resources, the potential of Sub-regional health organizations to support capacity building and recognition that each effort builds on preceding efforts of others, and that it is important to explore and understand where the energy and momentum for change lies.FUNDING: The work described here has been funded by IDRC Canada under research grant # 108237 "West and Central African partnership for maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health research."PMID:38322739 | ...

Profile of health facilities and determinants of the family planning services supply to unmarried adolescents in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Niger
CONCLUSION: By identifying facility profiles and determinants of FP services supply, this study provides a pathway for action to ensure that adolescents have access to these services regardless of their marital status in West Africa.FUNDING: This work was carried out with the support of the COMCAHPSS project funded by IDRC and the Adolescent Health in West Africa (Adowa) project funded by MRC.PMID:38322740 | PMC:PMC10630035 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.13 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Strengths, disconnects and lessons in local and central governance of the response to the first wave of COVID-19 in Ghana
CONCLUSIONS: Adequate financing and equipping of frontline health facilities and workers for surveillance, laboratory and case management activities, transparent criteria to ensure effective targeting and monitoring of the distribution of relief items, and a stronger bottom-up approach to the planning and implementation of interventions need to be given high priority in any response to health security threats such as COVID-19.FUNDING: This work is funded by International Development Research Centre Grant No. 109479, Exploring and learning from evidence, policy and systems responses to COVID-19 in West and Central Africa.PM...

Predictors of knowledge and practice of newborn care among post-natal mothers attending immunisation clinics in Southeast Nigeria
CONCLUSIONS: Good practice was identified in the majority. Being married, older, living in urban areas and having good knowledge were predictors of good practice. Health facility delivery, continuous support by health workers and post-natal education to mothers in rural areas are recommended policy priorities.FUNDING: None declared.PMID:38322744 | PMC:PMC10630039 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v56i3s.14 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)
