Successful pulmonary artery stenting for occlusion at a constructed pericardial conduit after right upper double sleeve lobectomy
AbstractThe patient was a 53-year-old man. His chief complaint was a cough and dyspnea on exertion. Computed tomography (CT) showed a 3-cm-diameter tumor in the right upper lobe with invasion from hilar lymph nodes to the superior vena cava, right main bronchus, and pulmonary artery. After being diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer, the patient underwent preoperative induction radiochemotherapy. At surgery, right upper double sleeve lobe lobectomy was performed. The right main pulmonary artery was reconstructed using a pericardial conduit. CT 1  week after surgery showed impaired blood flow in the right pulmonary art...

Bone metastasis in esophageal adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma: a SEER-based study
ConclusionsEsophageal cancer patients with male sex, middle esophagus and brain metastasis were more likely to have bone metastasis. Compared to patients with other metastatic sites such as liver, brain and lung, patients with bone metastasis had a worse prognosis. Our findings provide recommendations about clinical guidelines for esophageal cancer patients with bone metastasis. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Surgical repair for systolic anterior motion of anterior mitral leaflet due to mitral annular calcification
This report illustrates the novelty of surgical technique, the indication, and the limitation of mitral valve repair for such rare cases. A proper understanding of the mechanism in each patient and enhanced techniques for decalcification of posterior mitral annular calcification are needed to treat such complex cases. Post COVID-19 pneumo-hematocele: clinical presentation and treatment pathway
ConclusionsIt appears that post-COVID-19 pneumo-hematocele occurs secondary to encapsulation of blood accumulation  inside the lung, as a result of micro-capillary bleeding, with partial reabsorption of blood and subsequent air filling. We recommend surgery for patients with pneumo-hematoceles of 5 cm and those with persistent lesions of 3 cm.Trial registrationClinical Trial Registration: NCT05067881. Two cases of catastrophic deterioration and multiple leaflet detachment in Trifecta valves
AbstractReports of early and catastrophic acute structural valve deterioration (SVD) in Trifecta valve (Abbott, St Paul, MN, USA) with multiple leaflet detachment are rare. We encountered two cases of early SVD in Trifecta valve with tears on two leaflets. Both cases presented with acute heart failure because of aortic insufficiency, and underwent redo aortic valve replacement; one patient died due to multiple organ failure caused by cardiogenic shock. Durability issues with the Trifecta valves; thus, necessitates long-term vigilance in aortic replacement patients. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Patients scheduled to undergo esophageal surgery should have the highest priority for perioperative oral management triage: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionPatients who underwent surgery at the DES had more dental problems than other surgery patients. Accordingly, these patients should be given the highest priority for POM triage. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Repeated aortic dissection in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
AbstractAutosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is a systemic disorder associated with cardiovascular complications. However, there are few reports on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease-associated aortic dissection. Herein, we present a rare case of a 46-year-old man with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who underwent endovascular repair for acute type B aortic dissection three years after his initial open surgery for acute type A aortic dissection. The postoperative course was uneventful, and he is doing well two years after the endovascular repair. Clinicians should be aware of the potential fo...

Primary and secondary cardiac tumors: clinical presentation, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and results
AbstractCardiac tumours are some of the rarest primary tumours, while cardiac metastasis are more common yet still relatively rare. Seventy five percent of primary cardiac tumours are benign tumours. Cardiac tumours present with a range of obstructive, embolic, arrhythmic or systemic symptoms, and in many cases may present asymptomatically. The clinical presentation depends largely on the size and location of the mass. With advances in cardiac imagining and the introduction of cardiopulmonary bypass, the diagnosis and surgical treatment of these rare tumours has improved the prognosis and outlook for benign and malignant t...

Total arch replacement with both frozen elephant trunk and transthoracic aorto-axillary extra-anatomical bypass through partial sternotomy for acute aortic dissection in a tracheostomy patient
We present herein a case of acute type A aortic dissection in a patient with a permanent tracheostoma after laryngectomy. Total arch replacement with both frozen elephant trunk and extra-anatomical bypass for supra-aortic trunks was performed through T-shaped partial sternotomy, resulting in recovery without deep sternal wound infection. Validity of surgical decision based on intraoperative frozen section diagnosis for unconfirmed pulmonary nodules with previous malignancy
ConclusionsSurgical decision-making based on FSD for preoperatively unconfirmed PN in patients with previous malignancy was generally adequate. However, there were inadequate or excessive surgical procedures due to limitations in the accuracy of intraoperative FSD. Improving the accuracy of intraoperative FSD is a necessary step for obtaining adequate surgical decision-making and precision medicine. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Better intraoperative cardiopulmonary stability and similar postoperative results of spontaneous ventilation combined with intubation than non-intubated thoracic surgery
ConclusionsSpontaneous ventilation with intubation is a more physiological procedure than non-intubated spontaneous ventilation in terms of intraoperative blood pressure stability and gas exchange. The surgical results were similar in the two groups. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)
