Late outcomes of the frozen elephant trunk technique for acute and chronic aortic dissection: the angle change of the FROZENIX by “spring-back” force
ConclusionsTotal arch replacement using the frozen elephant trunk technique affords good early-stage results for both acute and chronic aortic dissection. During follow-up, careful monitoring for aortic events and appropriate therapeutic interventions are required. If surgeons are to use this device, they must have a thorough understanding of its spring back force and other features. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Surgical outcomes in acute type A aortic dissection based on surgeon experience
ConclusionsOur surgical strategy for acute type A aortic dissection is safe and appropriate regardless of the experience of the primary surgeon. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

A paradigm shift for diaphragmatic and chest wall reconstruction using a bovine acellular dermal matrix: an analysis versus synthetic meshes
ConclusionsThe use of surgiMend in diaphragmatic and chest wall reconstruction is associated with fewer surgical site complications and readmissions compared to synthetic meshes. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

15-year outcomes of the JOCRI study (JOCRIED study): a randomised comparison of off-pump and on-pump multiple arterial coronary revascularisation
ConclusionsOff-pump coronary artery bypass grafting provides comparable 15-year outcomes to on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Optimal settings of near-infrared fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green for intraoperative detection of lymph node metastasis in esophageal cancer
AbstractLymphatic flow mapping using near-infrared fluorescence (NIR) imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) has been used for intraoperative diagnosis of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in various cancers. Accurate prediction of LNM intraoperatively may allow minimization of the extent of lymphadenectomy. However, a consistent method and diagnostic ability, allowing application of NIR-guided lymphatic flow mapping to esophageal cancer (EC), have not been established due to the multidirectional and complex characteristics of lymphatic flow in the esophagus. Herein, we present a novel NIR-guided surgical technique for predicting ...

Symptom progression following on-pump versus off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery in patients with peripheral arterial disease
ConclusionsIn summary, we found that cardiac surgery may lead to symptom progression in patients with severe claudication in the early postoperative period. Our results suggest that OPCAB may lead to lower rates of symptom progression compared to ONCAB. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Association between oxygen consumption and stepping exercise standardized with a triaxial accelerometer
ConclusionA simple and reproducible stepping test was suggested as applicable to standardizing the intensity of exercise using a triaxial accelerometer. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Assessment of listing criteria for lung transplant candidates with interstitial lung disease
ConclusionsThe 2014 ISHLT criteria could appropriately identify patients with ILD who have a potentially poor prognosis. In particular, 6-month decline in %FVC and shorter 6  min walk distance may be useful for selecting patients with higher risks of mortality. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Overlapping-plasty technique for pulmonary artery aneurysm
We report a case of massive pulmonary artery aneurysm that was successfully repaired using an ‘overlapping-plasty’ technique with the help of 3D image simulation. This specially designed procedure might be useful as a surgical option for pulmonary artery aneurysms. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Surgical aortic valve replacement provides better left ventricular mass regression than transcatheter aortic valve replacement in patients with small aortic annulus
ConclusionsSAVR provides better LV mass regression than TAVR with a comparable rate of PPM in patients with small aortic annulus. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Differences of mid-term outcomes in debranching thoracic endovascular aortic repair between zone 0 and zone 1 –2 landing
ConclusionsHigher mid-term mortality and stroke rates after Z0-TEVAR were confirmed by PS matching. Z0-TEVAR would be an alternative for high-risk patients with arch aneurysms requiring zone 0 landing but not a reliable method. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Video-assisted thoracoscopic tracheal resection with only endobronchial intubation
We report a case of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) tracheal resection and running suture anastomosis with only endobronchial intubation in a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). The tumor extended 3.2  × 1.9 cm in the distal trachea, and the distance to carina was 2 cm. Running suture anastomosis around the endobronchial tube was performed. No cross-field intubation was needed. The postoperative course was good and no complication occurred. VATS tracheal resection and running suture anasto mosis with only endobronchial intubation is a feasible option for patients with distal tracheal tumor. (Sou...

Clinical significance of spread of lipiodol marking for pulmonary nodules and its influence on surgery
ConclusionsLipiodol spreading did not directly influence surgery and complication. However, it was a sign of intrathoracic pleural adhesion, which could lead to increased duration of surgery and amount of bleeding. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)
