The 2022 top 10 list of endoscopy topics in medical publishing: an annual review by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Editorial Board
Using a systematic literature search of original articles published during 2022 in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and other high-impact medical and gastroenterology journals, the 10-member Editorial Board of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy composed a list of the 10 most significant topic areas in GI endoscopy during the study year. Each Editorial Board member was directed to consider 3 criteria in generating candidate lists —significance, novelty, and global impact on clinical practice—and subject matter consensus was facilitated by the Chair through electronic voting. Training endosonographers in needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy: Is there still a need?
Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is a technology used for high-magnification images of cellular surfaces throughout the body. The technology of CLE involves initial injection of intravenous fluorescein followed by tissue illumination with a low-power laser and subsequent detection of fluorescence from the reflected light. The term “confocal” refers to the alignment of both the illumination and the image collection systems in the same focal plane. The laser light is directed onto the tissue of interest, and reflected light is detected by the same lens through a pinhole. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

Outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection for esophageal cancer with segmental absence of intestinal musculature
Perforation during esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) typically results from electrical damage. However, there are cases in which perforation occurs due to segmental absence of intestinal musculature (SAIM) without iatrogenic muscular injury. We investigated the occurrence rate and clinical course of SAIM during esophageal ESD. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

Aspirin exposure and its association with metal stent patency in malignant distal biliary obstruction: a large international multicenter propensity score –matched study
Stent dysfunction is common after ERCP with self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) insertion for malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO). Chronic aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid; ASA) exposure has been previously shown to potentially decrease this risk. We aim to further ascertain the protective effect of ASA and to identify other predictors of stent dysfunction. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

Endoscopic Papillectomy for Ampullary Lesions of minor papilla
Ampullary lesions (AL) of the minor duodenal papilla are extremely rare. Endoscopic papillectomy (EP) is a routinely used treatment for AL of the major duodenal papilla but the role of EP for minor AL has not been accurately studied. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

Colonic-enteric Lumen-Apposing Metal stents: A Promising and Safe Alternative for Endoscopic Management of Small Bowel Obstruction
Lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) have revolutionized the treatment of various gastroenterological conditions that previously required surgery. The use of LAMS for the management of small-bowel obstruction (SBO) involves endoscopic ultrasound guided colo-enterostomy (EUS-CE) between colon and a dilated loop of the small intestine proximal to the point of obstruction. This procedure is potentially beneficial for patients with malignant SBO who are poor surgical candidates. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)
