Interstitial needles versus intracavitary applicators only for locally advanced cervical cancer: results from real-life dosimetric comparisons
ConclusionHR-CTV coverage was higher with IC/IS IGABT than with IC IGABT, with lower doses to the OAR in patients managed for LACC after RCT. Interstitial brachytherapy in the management of LACC after radiotherapy provides better coverage of the target volumes, this could contribute to better local control and improved survival of patients. Prognostic significance of β2-microglobulin decline index in multiple myeloma
Conclusionβ2M DI is a good predictive index for predicting treatment response and survival time in MM patients. The prognostic model added with β2M DI showed a better correlation with OS. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Case report: Anesthetic management for removal of tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery in renal cell carcinoma
Anesthetic management of patients with renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava (IVC) is challenging. This paper reports the experience of anesthesia management in a patient with advanced renal cell carcinoma with thrombus accumulation in the IVC, right atrium, and pulmonary artery who underwent radical nephrectomy and tumor thrombus removal assisted by cardiopulmonary bypass. The emboli, measuring approximately 3 × 6 cm in the left inferior pulmonary artery and 4 × 13 cm in the right main pulmonary artery, were removed completely. During incision of the IVC under systemic heparinization, signif...

Prognostic significance of pyroptosis-associated molecules in endometrial cancer: a comprehensive immunohistochemical analysis
DiscussionOur study identified cleaved caspase-1 p20 as an independent predictor of adverse outcomes in endometrial cancer. CHMP4B, an inhibitor of pyroptosis, was associated with an unfavorable RFS, whereas high cleaved gasdermin D/low CHMP4B expression was associated with a favorable RFS. These findings underscore the prognostic significance of pyroptosis and the potential interaction between cleaved gasdermin D and CHMP4B in endometrial cancer. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Case report: Metastatic ovarian mucinous carcinoma to the breast: diagnostic challenges and pitfalls
We report a case of breast metastases from advanced stage ovarian mucinous carcinoma in a 48-year-old female— a case hitherto unreported in the literature. The case is noteworthy for its atypical presentation marked by an areolar rash, clinically suggestive of Paget disease of the nipple. This unique clinical scenario, coupled with histopathological examination revealing in-situ-like carcinoma component, posed a diagnostic challenge in discerning the tumour origin. We emphasize the need for heightened awareness among pathologists to avoid misdiagnosing metastatic carcinomas as primary breast tumours, a potential pitfall ...

Oral rehabilitation and associated quality of life following mandibular reconstruction with free fibula flap: a cross-sectional study
DiscussionDespite the well-reconstructed bony structures, there is a need to increase the effort of achieving oral rehabilitation, especially looking at the patient’s persistent motivation for the procedure. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Assessment of knowledge and perceptions of human papillomavirus vaccine and its determinants among women who have eligible daughters in Debre Berhan City, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionWomen had poor knowledge and perceptions about the HPV vaccine. Maternal marital status, age, and having information about the HPV vaccine were the only predictors of women’s knowledge of the HPV vaccine. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

A deep insight into ferroptosis in lung disease: facts and perspectives
In the last decade, ferroptosis has received much attention from the scientific research community. It differs from other modes of cell death at the morphological, biochemical, and genetic levels. Ferroptosis is mainly characterized by non-apoptotic iron-dependent cell death caused by iron-dependent lipid peroxide excess and is accompanied by abnormal iron metabolism and oxidative stress. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that ferroptosis is closely related to the occurrence and development of lung diseases. COPD, asthma, lung injury, lung fibrosis, lung cancer, lung infection and other respiratory diseases...

The frequency of NUDT15 rs116855232 and its impact on mercaptopurine-induced toxicity in Syrian children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
ConclusionApproximately 6.5% of the study population exhibited reduced NUDT15 activity. The mercaptopurine dose intensity was considerably low in NUDT15 rs116855232 TT genotype compared with CT and CC. The dosage of mercaptopurine should be adjusted according to the NUDT15 genotype in pediatric patients with ALL. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Case report: Complex left-carina resection: three-year single-center experience
Carinal and tracheobronchial angle tumors have long been a contraindication for surgical removal; the technique of tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy makes it possible to approach this malignancy but still represents a surgical challenge. Left sleeve pneumonectomy is less common compared with right sleeve pneumonectomy and represents a minority component in the literature’s case series due to the complexity of the anatomy. In addition, there is no standard for treatment strategy, and it must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. From 2020 to 2023, we performed three left tracheal sleeve pneumonectomies and one neocarina recons...
