Buccal Fat Reduction
In this article, we present the anatomy, diagnosis, surgical technique, and postoperative care of the buccal fat pad removal. Anatomy knowledge and careful surgical technique are the primary considerations for a successful procedure with a low incidence of complications. The technique ’s main characteristics are the intraoral approach using blunt dissection and suction-assisted buccal fat pad extraction. (Source: Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America)

Face and Neck Lift Options in Patients of Ethnic Descent
Despite the propensity for humans to classify themselves into separate ethnoraces, the stigma of aging eventually appears in all. The mobile superficial musculo-aponeurotic system is a key area of change across all ethnicities and can be rejuvenated most effectively when the cutaneous retaining ligaments of the face and neck are fully released. The extended facelift techniques are logically the most effective in achieving this. Despite facelift surgery, the neck is often neglected but can be managed in a variety of ways. Changes within the deep neck structures are most effectively addressed under direct vision through a mi...

Rhinoplasty Considerations in the Ethnic Patient Using a Case-Based Approach
This article presents 2 types of patients undergoing primary rhinoplasty: a patient with a small hump or “pseudo” osteocartilaginous hump that was treated using a hybrid approach (surface dorsal preservation techniqu e) and a patient with a low nasal dorsum that was augmented using a diced cartilage glue graft. In both cases the nasal tips had poor structure and flimsy support and were treated using different structural grafting techniques. (Source: Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America)

Rhinoplasty Considerations in the Ethnic Patient
To achieve an esthetically satisfying surgical outcome in rhinoplasty of East Asians, it is most important to emphasize the augmentation of the flattened nose. However, correction of the accompanying nasal deviation or hump reduction together with appropriate tip work is essential for a successful outcome following rhinoplasty. Additionally, the surgeon must be aware of cosmetic deformities following silicone rhinoplasty and should be capable of appropriate nasal reconstruction in patients with silicone implant-related problems. Hair Restoration in the Ethnic Patient
Hair restoration surgery is a popular procedure among patients of all ethnic groups. Whether performing hair procedures to treat male and female pattern hair loss, or to restore eyebrows and beards, or to shorten overly high hairlines, the surgeon must consider differences in esthetic ideals, hair characteristics, and healing properties to achieve optimal results. Managing the Asian Eyelid
The Asian eyelid has distinct anatomic features that distinguish it from the Caucasian eyelid. These anatomic features are responsible for the ethnic identity of the Asian eyelid and guide operative technique and intervention. In the younger patient, the goal of Asian blepharoplasty often centers on the enhancement of the ethnic eye features and the creation of the supratarsal fold often referred to as the “double eyelid.” In the aging Asian eyelid, considerations should be made to evaluate and address dermatochalasis, blepharoptosis, and brow ptosis. In patients with significant lateral brow ptosis and lateral hooding...

Skeletal Contouring Techniques in the Ethnic Patient
The zygomaticomaxillary complex and mandible play a significant role in facial beauty. The projection of these bones drapes and conforms the overlying soft tissues, resulting in the light reflections and shadows that define a face. The size, contour, and projection of these bones of beauty are sexually dimorphic and ethnically defined. Excessive projection of these bones in any dimension can lead to undesirable esthetic appearance. Reduction malarplasty and mandibuloplasty are effective techniques that can be used to reshape the facial skeleton to a more desirable shape. (Source: Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America)

Rhinoplasty Considerations in the Ethnic Patient Using a Case-Based Approach
In this article 2 rhinoplasty cases involving patients of African descent are presented. One of these highlights the correction of a dorsal contour irregularity and an amorphous and ptotic tip with a widened alar base, addressed through an open approach. The second case focuses on improving nasal tip definition through an endonasal approach. (Source: Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America)

The Principles and Practice of Beauty
When discussing the concept of “beauty,” it is important to take a critical look at one’s biases, preferences, cultural background, and social position, among other things. We bring to the discussion our own attitudes, formed over decades through our environment, upbringing, and experiences. If our purpose as facial plastic surgeons is to help patients define and achieve a particular goal as to their appearance, we must understand how that goal fits into the larger “definition” of beauty.
