Differential COVID-19 preventive behaviors among Asian subgroups in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: The significant variation of preventive behavior across Asian subgroups signals the necessity of data disaggregation when it comes to understanding the health behavior of Asian Americans, which is critical for future pandemic preparedness. The excess behavioral risk among certain Asian subgroups (especially those 'other Asians') warrants further investigation and interventions about the driving forces behind these disparities.PMID:38018378 | DOI:10.1080/17476348.2023.2289527 (Source: Expert Review of Respiratory Medicine)

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for cardiac arrest: what, when, why, and how
Expert Rev Respir Med. 2023 Nov 27:1-15. doi: 10.1080/17476348.2023.2288160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) facilitated resuscitation was first described in the 1960s, but only recently garnered increased attention with large observational studies and randomized trials evaluating its use.AREAS COVERED: In this comprehensive review of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), we report the history of resuscitative ECMO, terminology, circuit configuration and cannulation considerations, complications, selection criteria, implementation and management, and imp...

Gene signatures in U-BIOPRED severe asthma for molecular phenotyping and precision medicine: time for clinical use
Expert Rev Respir Med. 2023 Nov 24:1-7. doi: 10.1080/17476348.2023.2278606. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The use and generation of gene signatures have been established as a method to define molecular endotypes in complex diseases such as severe asthma. Bioinformatic approaches have now been applied to large omics datasets to define the various co-existing inflammatory and cellular functional pathways driving or characterizing a particular molecular endotype.AREAS COVERED: Molecular phenotypes and endotypes of Type 2 inflammatory pathways and also of non-Type 2 inflammatory pathways, such as IL-6 trans-signa...

Recommendations on scuba diving in Birt-Hogg-Dub é syndrome
Expert Rev Respir Med. 2023 Nov 22:1-6. doi: 10.1080/17476348.2023.2284375. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Although very uncommon, severe injury and death can occur during scuba diving. One of the main causes of scuba diving fatalities is pulmonary barotrauma due to significant changes in ambient pressure. Pathology of the lung parenchyma, such as cystic lesions, might increase the risk of pulmonary barotrauma.AREAS COVERED: Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD), caused by pathogenic variants in the FLCN gene, is characterized by skin fibrofolliculomas, an increased risk of renal cell carcinoma, multiple lung cysts a...

Multidisciplinary bronchopulmonary dysplasia care
The objective of this article is to review and synthesize the available literature regarding multidisciplinary care in infants and children with established BPD, and to provide a framework that can guide clinical practice and future research.AREAS COVERED: A literature search was conducted using Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Embase and several components of multidisciplinary management of BPD were identified and reviewed, including chronic care, team development, team members, discharge planning, and outpatient care.EXPERT OPINION: Establishing a core multidisciplinary group familiar with the chronicity of established BPD is r...

Progress in genome-inspired treatment decisions for multifocal lung adenocarcinoma
Expert Rev Respir Med. 2023 Nov 20. doi: 10.1080/17476348.2023.2286277. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Multifocal lung adenocarcinoma (MFLA) is becoming increasingly recognized as a distinct subset of lung cancer, with unique biology, disease course, and treatment outcomes. While definitions remain controversial, MFLA is characterized by the development and concurrent presence of multiple independent (non-metastatic) lesions on the lung adenocarcinoma spectrum. Disease progression typically follows an indolent course measured in years, with a lower propensity for nodal and distant metastases than other more co...
