Mechanical ventilation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: current status and future perspectives
This article reviews the literature regarding mechanical ventilation in ARDS. A comprehensive overview of the principal settings for the ventilator parameters involved is provided as well as a report on the differences between controlled and assisted ventilation. Additionally, new modes of assisted ventilation are presented and discussed. The evidence concerning rescue strategies, including recruitment maneuvers and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, is analyzed. PubMed, EBSCO, and the Cochrane Library were searched up until June 2023, for relevant literature.EXPERT OPINION: Available evidence for mechanical vent...

Electromagnetic interference from automobile passive keyless entry in cardiovascular implantable electronic devices
CONCLUSIONS: Automobile PKE systems transmitted very low power signals. Therefore, under normal circumstances, CIED patients can use automobile PKE system safely without any EMI regardless of key fob positions in relation to the CIED pulse generator.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (https://clinicaltrials.gov), and the identification number is NCT03016390.PMID:37668539 | DOI:10.1080/17434440.2023.2255126 (Source: Expert Review of Medical Devices)

Low profile endografts for the endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term survival and freedom from reintervention rates were comparable among the three LPEs. The Cook Zenith device had the highest rates of limb stenosis/kinking, while the Incraft device had the lowest occurrence of type III endoleak.PROSPERO: Registration number: CRD42022315875.PMID:37647354 | DOI:10.1080/17434440.2023.2239148 (Source: Expert Review of Medical Devices)

The current state, challenges, and future directions of deep brain stimulation for obsessive compulsive disorder
Expert Rev Med Devices. 2023 Aug 29. doi: 10.1080/17434440.2023.2252732. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically and pathologically heterogenous, with symptoms often refractory to first line treatments. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of refractory OCD provides opportunity to adjust and individualize neuromodulation targeting aberrant circuitry underlying OCD. The tailoring of DBS therapy may allow precision in symptom control based on patient specific pathology. Progress has been made in understanding the potential targets for DBS intervention, however, ...

The new bone WB-SPECT/CT: hybrid, from head-to-toe and digital! Is it worth the effort?
Expert Rev Med Devices. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1080/17434440.2023.2252743. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: A bone scan (BS) plays a pivotal role in many oncological and non-oncological conditions. Planar BS is characterized by high sensitivity but low specificity. With respect to planar imaging, the implementation of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has allowed increased image contrast and more accurate tracer localization.AREAS COVERED: Recent technological innovations in the field of BS are treated, with a particular focus on multi-field-of-view devices allowing to cover the entire scan length...
