Endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced necroptosis promotes cochlear inflammation: Implications for age-related hearing loss
In this study, we found that the inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and necroptosis signalings are activated in the cochlea of aged C57BL/6 mice. ER stress activator tunicamycin (TM) induced necroptosis in cochlear HEI-OC1 cells and cochlear explants, while necroptosis inhibitors protected cochlear cells from ER stress-induced cell death. The antioxidants inhibited necroptosis and protected HEI-OC1 cells from TM insults. Necroptotic HEI-OC1 cells promoted the activation of the co-cultured macrophages via Myd88 signaling. Moreover, necroptosis inhibitor protected from TM-induced hearing loss, and inhibited infl...

Effect of outer membrane vesicles of Lactobacillus pentosus on Tau phosphorylation and CDK5-Calpain pathway in mice
This study explored the effects of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from the gut microbiota of AD patients on learning and memory abilities and Tau protein phosphorylation in mice. In contrast to the OMVs from healthy controls and the PBS treatment group, mice treated with AD-OMVs exhibited notable declines in learning and memory capabilities, as evidenced by results from the Morris water maze, Y-maze, and novel object recognition tests. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot assessments unveiled elevated levels of hyperphosphorylated Tau in the cortex and hippocampus of mice treated with AD-OMVs. However, there were no alter...

Impact of combined alpha-lipoic acid and mitoquinone supplementation on myocardial infarction in aged rats: Heart performance and molecular mechanisms
CONCLUSION: The study revealed that combined intervention synergistically mitigated cardiac dysfunction by suppressing inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in aged rats with MI. Further research is needed to validate the potential of ALA and Mito Q as therapeutic options for elderly people at risk of heart attacks.PMID:38484905 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112402 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)

The mediating role of lower body muscle strength and IGF-1 level in the relationship between age and cognition. A MIDUS substudy
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated the serial multiple mediation roles of muscle strength and IGF-1 levels on the relationship between age and specific cognitive functions. Further longitudinal research should be performed to confirm the serial mediation results.PMID:38484906 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112399 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)
