A Comparative Study on "Mai" and "Blood Vessels" in Early Chinese and Western Medicine: Based on Hippocratic Corpus and Cauterization Canon of the Eleven Vessels of the Foot and Forearm.
This study compared the theory describing the "four pairs of blood vessels" in the Hippocratic Corpus with the description of vessels (Mai, ) in the Cauterization Canon of the Eleven Vessels of the Foot and Forearm. The two theories are comparable because of the time period in which they were written, the similarities between the descriptions of the Mai and blood vessels, and the treatment methods for symptoms corresponding to their dysfunctions. We discovered that the Mai theory and the blood vessel theory in the Hippocratic Corpus were conceived with similar motivations. They had a lot of coinciding information...

Protective Effects of Angong Niuhuang Pill on Early Atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- Mice by Reducing the Inflammatory Response.
In this study, we investigated the role of ANP in reducing inflammation during early AS, using a high-fat diet-induced ApoE-/- mouse model of AS. Compared to those with simvastatin, ANP had no significant effect on serum triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein levels. However, it effectively inhibited splenic and vascular inflammation. This agent also reduced the Th17/CD4+T ratio and mRNA expression of IL-6 and increased the Treg/CD4+T ratio and mRNA expression of TGF-β1. Thus, ANP restored Th17/Treg homeostasis in the spleen. It also regulated pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine expression...

Authors: Liu B, Ma R, Zhang J, Sun P, Yi R, Zhao X Abstract Small-leaved Kuding tea is a traditional Chinese tea that is rich in polyphenols. In the current study, we investigated the preventive effect of small-leaved Kuding tea (SLKDT) on D-galactose-induced oxidative aging in mice. Changes in serum, skin, liver, and spleen of experimental animals were determined using biochemical and molecular biology techniques. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that polyphenol extract of SLKDT (PSLKDT) improved the indices of the thymus, brain, heart, liver, spleen, and kidney function in model mice. PSLKDT prevented a decrease...

Comparison of Magnetic Auriculotherapy, Laser Auriculotherapy and Their Combination for Treatment of Insomnia in the Elderly: A Double-Blinded Randomised Trial.
Conclusions: The treatment effects of the three procedures were comparable in subjective parameters but not by objective measures using actigraphic monitoring. Longer therapeutic course and more frequent administration of LAT may be considered in future trials to achieve the optimal treatment effect. Trial Registration: This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02970695, registered May 2016. PMID: 31239857 [PubMed] (Source: Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine)

Asparagus Polysaccharide Suppresses the Migration, Invasion, and Angiogenesis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells Partly by Targeting the HIF-1 α/VEGF Signalling Pathway In Vitro.
In conclusion, our results suggest that ASP suppresses the migration, invasion, and angiogenesis of HCC cells partly via inhibiting the HIF-1α/VEGF signalling pathway. PMID: 31239858 [PubMed] (Source: Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine)

Ethnobotanical Study of Cultivated Plants in Kai šiadorys District, Lithuania: Possible Trends for New Herbal Based Medicines.
Conclusions: Only 19 of the cultivated medicinal plant species mentioned by interviewed persons are described in the World Health Organization monographs. This means that the remaining 52 species are used without the World Health Organization approved medical indications, based solely on the folk medicine knowledge and experience. This study showed that the folk use of plants is strongly rooted in daily practice in the studied area. PMID: 31239859 [PubMed] (Source: Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine)

Isoliquiritigenin Attenuates Monocrotaline-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension via Inhibition of the Inflammatory Response and PASMCs Proliferation.
Authors: Jin H, Jiang Y, Du F, Guo L, Wang G, Kim SC, Lee CW, Shen L, Zhao R Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive and serious disease, where exacerbated inflammatory response plays a critical role. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), an important flavonoid isolated from Glycyrrhizae radix, exhibits a wide range of pharmacological actions including anti-inflammation. Previously we found ISL alleviated hypoxia-induced PH; in the present study, to extend this, we evaluated the effects of ISL on monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PH and the relevant mechanisms. Rats received a single intraperitoneal injection of MCT, fo...

Detarium microcarpum, Guiera senegalensis, and Cassia siamea Induce Apoptosis and Cell Cycle Arrest and Inhibit Metastasis on MCF7 Breast Cancer Cells.
In this study, antioxidant capacities and inhibitory effects against MCF7 cells of the extracts of stem bark of three Nigerian medicinal plants (Detarium microcarpum, Guiera senegalensis, and Cassia siamea) were investigated. The D. microcarpum extracts had the highest antioxidant and antiproliferative effects, followed by that of G. senegalensis, and the C. siamea extracts had minimal effects. The IC50 values of the methanol and aqueous extracts from the three plants that inhibited the proliferation of MCF7 cells ranged from 78-> 500 μg/ml. Moreover, all the plant extracts but the aqueous extract of Cassia siamea ex...
