Teprotumumab Treatment for Thyroid-Associated Ophthalmopathy
Background: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), an autoimmune process affecting the tissues surrounding the eye, most commonly develops in individuals with Graves ’ disease. It is disfiguring, can cause vision loss, and dramatically lessens the quality of life in patients. There has been an absence of approved medical therapies for TAO with proven effectiveness and safety in multicenter, placebo-controlled, and adequately powered clinical trials.Summary: The following is a brief overview of the rationale for developing a monoclonal antibody inhibitor of the insulin-like growth factor-I receptor into a treatment for ...

Quality of Life during Treatment with Lenvatinib for Thyroid Cancer: The Patients ’ Perspective beyond the Medical Evaluation
Conclusion: RAI-R TC patients reported a general increase in prevalence and interference on daily activities of symptomatic AEs during therapy with LEN. Self-perceived QoL initially decreased during therapy. However, our data suggest that QoL could be restored after 12 months; this trend might partly reflect the impact of therapy optimisation.Eur Thyroid J (Source: European Thyroid Journal)

Effect of Thyroid Hormones on Adipose Tissue Flexibility
The recruitment and activation of energy-consuming brown adipocytes is currently considered as potential therapeutic approach to combat obesity. Thyroid hormones (TH) significantly contribute to full thermogenic capacity of brown adipocytes. A number of recent studies suggest that TH also induce the recruitment of brown adipocytes in white adipose depots, a process known as browning. In this review, we will summarize underlying mechanisms by which TH mediate brown adipose tissue activity and white adipose tissue browning. Furthermore, we will discuss the relevance of TH-induced white adipose tissue browning for thermoregul...

Thyroid Hormones within the Normal Range and Cardiac Function in the General Population: The EPIPorto Study
Conclusions: Thyroid function within the reference range was associated with heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac structure, and function. Increasing thyroid function (lower TSH, higher FT4, or higher FT3) was associated with a higher heart rate, a lower diastolic blood pressure, and larger LV volumes. LV wall thickness and ejection fraction had a U-shaped association with thyroid hormones.Eur Thyroid J (Source: European Thyroid Journal)

The Protein Translocation Defect of MCT8 < sup > L291R < /sup > Is Rescued by Sodium Phenylbutyrate
Conclusion: NaPB is not only suitable for the treatment of mutations leading to misfolding and protein degradation, but also for a mutant wrongly sorted inside a cell which is otherwise functional.Eur Thyroid J (Source: European Thyroid Journal)

2020 European Thyroid Association Clinical Practice Guideline for the Use of Image-Guided Ablation in Benign Thyroid Nodules
Standard therapeutic approaches for benign thyroid lesions that warrant intervention are surgery for cold and either surgery or radioiodine for autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTN). Image-guided thermal ablation (TA) procedures are increasingly proposed as therapy options for selected clinical conditions. Due to mounting scientific evidence and widening availability, ETA considered it appropriate to develop guidelines for the use of TA in adult patients. TA procedures are well tolerated, but a dedicated training of the operators is required and information on possible complications needs to be shared with the pa...

Palliative Electrochemotherapy Treatment of Cutaneous Metastases in a Patient with Advanced Thyroid Papillary Carcinoma
Advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with cutaneous metastases may cause pain, ulceration, and bleeding. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a minimally invasive treatment of tumors located in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The electric pulses potentiate the toxicity of cytostatic agents entering the tumor cell. It is highly effective especially to relieve pain and improve the quality of life. The adverse events are local and transient. A case of progressive metastatic PTC who developed bleeding cutaneous metastases treated with ECT is described.Eur Thyroid J 2020;9:221 –224 (Source: European Thyroid Journal)

2019 European Thyroid Association Guidelines on the Management of Thyroid Dysfunction following Immune Reconstitution Therapy
Thyroid dysfunction (TD) frequently occurs as an autoimmune complication of immune reconstitution therapy (IRT), especially in individuals with multiple sclerosis treated with alemtuzumab, a pan-lymphocyte depleting drug with subsequent recovery of immune cell numbers. Less frequently, TD is triggered by highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or patients undergoing bone-marrow/hematopoietic-stem-cell transplantation (BMT/HSCT). In both alemtuzumab-induced TD and HIV/HAART patients, the commonest disorder is Graves ’ disease (GD), followed by hypothyroidi...

Risk of Thyroid Cancer in 1,504 Patients Referred for Thyroid Surgery with Assumed Benign Histology
Conclusions: The risk of malignancy of 7.6% and 6.8% was high, considering that patients with malignant FNA, suspicious FNA, or clinical findings indicating malignancy were excluded, and 2.2% of these malignancies were stages T2 –4. In cases with solitary solid tumour on ultrasound, the risk of malignancy should not be ignored, even with benign FNA.Eur Thyroid J (Source: European Thyroid Journal)
