Ear and upper airway clinical outcome measures for use in primary ciliary dyskinesia research: a scoping review
Conclusions This scoping review highlights the lack of data regarding ear and upper airway outcomes in PCD. It also reports a high heterogeneity in outcome definitions or measures. We provide well-founded specific suggestions to standardise ear and upper airway outcome definitions and reporting for future PCD research studies. (Source: European Respiratory Review)

The role of oral appliance therapy in obstructive sleep apnoea
There is now widespread recognition within the world of sleep medicine of the increasing importance of dental sleep medicine and, in particular, the role of oral appliance therapy (OAT) in the management of adults with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). For the purpose of this review, the term OAT refers to a custom-made intra-oral appliance, which acts to posture the mandible in a forward and downward direction, away from its natural resting position. Whilst nasally applied continuous positive airway pressure remains the "gold standard" in nonsurgical OSA management, OAT remains the recognised alternative treatment. This rev...

Meditative movement for breathlessness in advanced COPD or cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis
In conclusion, in people with advanced COPD or cancer, meditative movement does not improve breathlessness, health-related quality of life or exercise capacity. Methodological limitations lead to low levels of certainty in the results. (Source: European Respiratory Review)

Barriers to and facilitators of populational adherence to prevention and control measures of COVID-19 and other respiratory infectious diseases: a qualitative evidence synthesis
Conclusions: This review suggests that financial and social support, assertive communication, trust in political authorities and greater regulation of social media enhance adherence to prevention and control measures for COVID-19 and infectious respiratory diseases. Designing and implementing effective educational public health interventions targeting the findings of barriers and facilitators highlighted in this review are key to reducing the impact of infectious respiratory diseases at the population level. Clinical utility of WHO-recommended screening tools and development and validation of novel clinical prediction models for pulmonary tuberculosis screening among outpatients living with HIV: an individual participant data meta-analysis
Conclusions: CRP sets the standard for tuberculosis screening among outpatient PLHIV. The choice between using CRP at 5 mg·L–1 cut-off or in a CPM depends on available resources. (Source: European Respiratory Review)

Extreme weather and asthma: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions: Our study showed that extreme weather events more prominently increased the risk of asthma morbidity and mortality in children and females. Climate change is a critical concern for asthma control. (Source: European Respiratory Review)

Basic, translational and clinical aspects of bronchiectasis in adults
Bronchiectasis is a common progressive respiratory disease with recognisable radiological abnormalities and a clinical syndrome of cough, sputum production and recurrent respiratory infections. Inflammatory cell infiltration into the lung, in particular neutrophils, is central to the pathophysiology of bronchiectasis. Herein we explore the roles and relationships between infection, inflammation and mucociliary clearance dysfunction in the establishment and progression of bronchiectasis. Microbial and host-mediated damage are important processes underpinning bronchiectasis and the relative contribution of proteases, cytokin...

The role of diet and nutrition in the management of COPD
In 2014, the European Respiratory Society published a statement on nutritional assessment and therapy in COPD. Since then, increasing research has been performed on the role of diet and nutrition in the prevention and management of COPD. Here, we provide an overview of recent scientific advances and clinical implications. Evidence for a potential role of diet and nutrition as a risk factor in the development of COPD has been accumulating and is reflected in the dietary patterns of patients with COPD. Consuming a healthy diet should, therefore, be promoted in patients with COPD. Distinct COPD phenotypes have been identified...

Pulmonary rehabilitation and physical interventions
Pulmonary rehabilitation has established a status of evidence-based therapy for patients with symptomatic COPD in the stable phase and after acute exacerbations. Rehabilitation should have the possibility of including different disciplines and be offered in several formats and lines of healthcare. This review focusses on the cornerstone intervention, exercise training, and how training interventions can be adapted to the limitations of patients. These adaptations may lead to altered cardiovascular or muscular training effects and/or may improve movement efficiency. Optimising pharmacotherapy (not the focus of this review) ...

Efficacy and safety of gefapixant for chronic cough: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Conclusions This meta-analysis revealed dose-dependent efficacy and adverse effects of gefapixant against chronic cough. Further studies are required to investigate the feasibility of moderate-dose (i.e. 45–50 mg twice daily) gefapixant in clinical practice. (Source: European Respiratory Review)

Phenotype overlap in the natural history of asthma
The heterogeneity of asthma makes it challenging to unravel the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the disease. Despite the wealth of research identifying diverse phenotypes, many gaps still remain in our knowledge of the disease's complexity. A crucial aspect is the impact of airborne factors over a lifetime, which often results in a complex overlap of phenotypes associated with type 2 (T2), non-T2 and mixed inflammation. Evidence now shows overlaps between the phenotypes associated with T2, non-T2 and mixed T2/non-T2 inflammation. These interconnections could be induced by different determinants such as recurrent infections,...
