Dupilumab in Asia-Pacific patients with persistent asthma
Conclusion: In patients with persistent type 2 asthma and no OCS maintenance, DPL led to rapid, sustained improvement in lung function and asthma control, reduced AER, and was generally well tolerated. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

ORBE II study: Is rapid response to benralizumab associated with positive long term clinical outcomes?
Conclusions: A substantial proportion of patients could be defined as RR to benralizumab and showed a high level of response after one year of treatment. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Switching patients to maintenance and reliever therapy in the Emergency Department? - A qualitative study exploring the attitudes and beliefs of patients and healthcare professionals
Conclusion: Patients and HCP have a willingness to try new inhalers prescribed in ED to optimise asthma control but highlighted need for support with the change – including access to information to take home and follow-up support (patients) and clear guidelines (HCP). Under-treated asthma in adults - a common problem
Conclusions: Under-treated asthma in step 1-3 is common, and associates with female sex, current smokers, higher BMI, and lower socio-economic status. After evaluation of inhaler technique and adherence, appropriate escalation of treatment is important as these patients have an increased risk for future exacerbations. Change in FEV1 as early predictor of response to biological therapy in patients with severe uncontrolled asthma.
Conclusions: The percentage of responders is high. The change in FEV1(100ml and/or 10%)after 3 months of therapy is not an early predictor for identifying responders. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Our experience of Dupilumab and maintenance oral corticosteroid use in severe adult atopic dermatitis associated to severe asthma.
Conclusions: Dupilumab is effective in improving AD unresponsive to conventional therapy in patients with severe asthma and resulted in the reduction of OCS without interference with the control of asthma symptoms. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

An online survey on Italian patients and physicians perspectives on the management of asthma
Conclusions: Patients appear to overestimate their level of asthma control, that is not aligned with their reporting of symptoms/limitations. The consolidated proactive treatment with ICS/LABA and as-needed SABA remains the preferred initial approach, in line with GINA track 2. Furthermore, the co-prescription of MART therapy and SABA suggests confusion between reliever strategies in real world. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Steroid weaning service evaluation for patients with severe eosinophilic asthma
Conclusion: The service successfully managed to wean the vast majority of patients’ OCS. While this sometimes requires intensive nursing input, it remains the much preferred option than the long-term health risks that OCS present. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Lung function response to inhaled glucocorticoids in smoking patients with adult-onset asthma
Conclusion The result indicates that sub-acute lung function responses to ICS treatment in adult-onset asthma do not differ according to smoking status. The result suggests similar start of ICS therapy regardless of smoking history. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Interpretation and clinical significance of multiple-flows exhaled nitric oxide in severe asthma framework
Conclusions: J’awNO was differently expressed among the SA endotypes and showed a better accuracy than FeNO in predicting a good response to biologic treatment, supporting its potential use in clinical practice. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Effects of hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle on asthma
Introduction: The effect of the menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations on asthma is little known compared to the effect of allergens, irritants, respiratory infections and many other factors.Study Objectives: To identify anamnestic, clinical, hormonal, and functional elements related to the menstrual cycle that may influence asthma control.Materials and methods: descriptive prospective study on 95 non-menopausal asthmatic patients, aged 16 to 50 years. They provided spirometries and assays of progesterone and estradiol during the phases: follicular between the 3rd and 5th day of the cycle, luteal between the 19th and...

Serum inhaled corticosteroid levels in patients with severe asthma.
There are no robust methods of assessing compliance to inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy. Medication possession ratio calculated based on dispensed prescriptions is often used but does not account for whether the medication was taken, and if so correctly. We explored the feasibility of measuring serum ICS levels in patients with severe asthma on biologics.Patients with severe asthma approved for mepolizumab were invited. Patients were instructed to withhold their ICS on the morning of the first visit for spirometry, but to continue their prescribed ICS for the remainder of the study. Serum was taken approximately four h...

Therapeutic drug monitoring of inhaled drugs in hair of patients with asthma: a proof-of-concept study
Conclusions: These results confirm the feasibility of measuring budesonide and formoterol in the hair and suggest a relationship between drug exposure and hair concentrations. This may be of interest in difficult-to-treat severe asthma. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)
