Childhood physical maltreatment with physical injuries is associated with higher adult psychopathology symptoms
ConclusionsThese findings suggest that clinicians should discriminate CPM behavior from CPM physical sequelae in order to increase effectiveness of mental health treatment with adults with history of CPM. Our findings are discussed in light of the evolutionary-developmental frameworks of adaptative development and cumulative risk hypothesis. (Source: European Psychiatry)

Increased risk of dementia in patients with Schizophrenia: A population-based cohort study in Taiwan
ConclusionsSchizophrenia was significantly associated with the risk of all-cause dementia. Data are scarce on the mechanisms through which antipsychotic agents protect persons with schizophrenia from developing dementia. Further research is recommended to elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the association between schizophrenia and dementia, and whether antipsychotics protect against the development of dementia in schizophrenia. Patient centric measures for a patient centric era: Agreement and convergent between ratings on The Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) scale and the Clinical Global Impressions – Improvement (CGI-S) scale in bipolar and major depressive disorder
ConclusionOur findings support the utility of the PGI-I as a participant rated measure of global improvement among individuals with bipolar or major depressive disorders. (Source: European Psychiatry)

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of psychotic depression in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966
ConclusionsOur findings in a naturalistic cohort support the notion that the course of illness in PD is mostly similar to that of PBD, it is less severe than in schizophrenia, but worse than in non-psychotic depression. PD seems to have high psychiatric comorbidity. (Source: European Psychiatry)

Psychopathological characteristics and adverse childhood events are differentially associated with suicidal ideation and suicidal acts in mood disorders

Gut microbiome and magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of subjects at ultra-high risk for psychosis may support the membrane hypothesis
ConclusionBoth gut microbiome and imaging studies of UHR subjects suggest the membrane dysfunction in the brain and hence might support the membrane hypothesis of schizophrenia. (Source: European Psychiatry)

Metacognitive Training for Depression (D-MCT) reduces false memories in depression. A randomized controlled trial
Publication date: September 2018Source: European Psychiatry, Volume 53Author(s): Steffen Moritz, Brooke C. Schneider, Judith Peth, Sönke Arlt, Lena JelinekAbstractMetacognitive Training for Depression (D-MCT) is a highly standardized group program targeted at depression-related (“Beckian”) emotional as well as cognitive biases, including mood-congruent and false memory. While prior results are promising with respect to psychopathological outcomes (depression), it is unclear whether D-MCT also meets its goal of improving cognitive biases, such as false memories. In the framework of a randomized controlled trial (registe...

Predicting suicidal behaviour after first episode of non-affective psychosis: The role of neurocognitive functioning
ConclusionsGCF was found to be the most robust predictor of SB along with severe depressive symptomatology. Hence, poorer cognitive performance in FEP appears to emerge as a risk factor for suicidal behaviour from early stages of the illness and a comprehensive neurocognitive assessment may contribute to risk assessment. Changes in attitude towards LAI antipsychotic maintenance treatment: A two-year follow-up study
ConclusionsThe switch to LAI-AMT may help to address the subjective core of an optimal recovery in stabilized schizophrenic patients. A sustained improvement in patients’ attitude towards drug may help to achieve patient’s compliance. The size of this study needs to be expanded to produce more solid and generalizable results. Burnout in mental health professionals: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence and determinants
This study aimed to estimate the level of burnout in mental health professionals and to identify specific determinants of burnout in this population. A systematic search of MEDLINE/PubMed, PsychINFO/Ovid, Embase, CINAHL/EBSCO and Web of Science was conducted for original research published between 1997 and 2017. Sixty-two studies were identified as meeting the study criteria for the systematic review. Data on the means, standard deviations, and prevalence of the dimensions of burnout were extracted from 33 studies and included in the meta-analysis (n = 9409). The overall estimated pooled prevalence for emotional exhaus...

Age of onset and quality of life among males and females with schizophrenia: A national study
ConclusionsAn earlier age of onset is associated with a better quality of life in schizophrenia which is tentatively explained by social decline. Specific trends in psychiatric symptom severity may account for this association among females while social advantages may account for the particular results found among males. Who are the European youths willing to engage in radicalisation? A multidisciplinary review of their psychological and social profiles
ConclusionThere are many similarities between psychopathological manifestations of adolescence and mechanisms at stake during the radicalisation process. As a consequence, and despite the rarity of psychotic disorders, mental health professionals have a role to play in the treatment and understanding of radical engagement among European youth. Studies with empirical data are limited, and more research should be promoted (in particular in females and in non-Muslim communities) to better understand the phenomenon and to propose recommendations for prevention and treatment. Not intended, still embarrassed: Social anxiety is related to increased levels of embarrassment in response to unintentional social norm violations
ConclusionsThese findings indicate that increased embarrassment for unintentional SN violations is an important characteristic of social anxiety. These high levels of embarrassment are likely related to the debilitating concern of socially-anxious people that their skills and behavior do not meet expectations of others, and to their fear of blundering. This concern might be an important target for future therapeutic interventions. (Source: European Psychiatry)
