Treatments in Neurology: The Winding Road from 1897 to 2022
We present an overview of the evolution of neurological treatments from 1897 to 2022.Key Messages: However, the last 125 years have not consisted of constant progress. The exceptional advances made in some diseases (multiple sclerosis or surgical treatment of Parkinson ’s disease) cannot hide the stagnation in others (certain brain tumors or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

A Study of Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy Induced by the TTR Val30Leu Mutation in China
Conclusions: The clinical manifestations of this mutation involve mainly limb sensory or motor disorders or gastrointestinal symptoms or both, and the electrophysiological examination shows neurogenic damage.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Association between Cerebrovascular Risk Factors and Collateral Compensation in Chronic Symptomatic Intracranial Vertebrobasilar Stenosis
Conclusion: Higher HDL levels are associated with higher incidence of GCC, whereas higher FBG levels and hyperlipidemia are associated with higher incidence of PCC.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Prediction of Motor Outcome of Stroke Patients Using a Deep Learning Algorithm with Brain MRI as Input Data
Conclusion: We showed that a CNN model trained using whole-brain axial T2-weighted MR images of stroke patients would help predict upper and lower limb motor function at the chronic stage.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Neuroimaging of Diabetic Striatopathy: More Questions than Answers
Conclusion: The term “diabetic striatopathy” is ambiguous and controversial. Pathological mechanisms behind clinical-radiological discordance in hyperglycemia-induced striatopathy need further exploration through well-designed studies. We propose a classification of DS that includes symptomatic DS (striatal neuroima ging lesions in association with a clinically evident movement disorder and hyperglycemia), clinically isolated DS (clinically evident movement disorders without striatal changes in neuroimaging), and radiologically isolated DS.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

The Role of MRI in the Treatment of Drug-Resistant Focal Epilepsy
Background: Epilepsy is a prevalent chronic condition affecting about 50 million people worldwide. A third of patients with focal epilepsy suffer from seizures unresponsive to medication. Uncontrolled seizures damage the brain, are associated with cognitive decline, and have negative impact on well-being. For these patients, the surgical resection of the brain region that gives rise to seizures is the most effective treatment.Summary: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a central role in detecting epileptogenic brain lesions. In this review, we critically discuss advances in neuroimaging acquisition, analytical post-acq...

Antioxidants for Treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Idebenone appeared to be safe and effective in improving pulmonary function in DMD patients, while pentoxifylline, superoxide dismutase, penicillamine, or a combination of vitamin E with penicillamine did not show a significant therapeutic effect. CoQ10 and FLAVOMEGA might be beneficial in improving muscle strength or physical activity in DMD patients. However, additional trials with more participants are warranted in the future.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Prognostic Factor for Subacute Encephalitis with First-Episode Psychosis
Conclusions: The use of mechanical ventilation is a poor prognostic factor of subacute encephalitis with FEP, and female sex may be a risk factor for unfavorable development of the disease.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Outcomes of Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke When Multiple Passes Are Required and Associated Risk Factors
Conclusion: Needing more than 2 passes during mechanical thrombectomy is associated with poorer outcomes. Higher preprocedural NIHSS scores and internal carotid artery thrombi are associated with more than 2 passes.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Electroencephalographic-Based Functional Connectivity Networks of Visual Hallucinations and Visuospatial Dysfunctions in Parkinson ’s Disease
Visual dysfunction is an important nonmotor symptom of Parkinson ’s disease (PD). Visual hallucinations (VHs) and visuospatial dysfunctions (VSDs) are common visual dysfunctions in PD; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate neuronal synchronization between patients with PD with and without VH or VSD using electroencephalo graphic (EEG) coherence analysis. Twenty-four patients with sporadic PD were evaluated for the presence of VH and VSD, and were divided into VH-negative and VH-positive groups, and these groups were further subdivided by VSD status. Coherence analysis was performe...

Huntington ’s Disease Progression and Caregiver Burden
This study aims to assess the caregivers’ burden cross-sectionally and longitudinally and look for biological and clinical patients-related burdening factors. In total, 144 caregiver-patient pairs observed annually for up to 8 years were included in the s tudy. In all of the patients, demographic data were collected, Unified Huntingtonapos;s Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) assessments were conducted, and disease burden (DB) was calculated when caregivers were assessed in Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI). Caregivers’ burden measured in CBI at the first visit reached 18.7 ± 18.4 scores. Longitudinal observation showed no e...

Cerebrospinal Fluid Homeostasis and Hydrodynamics: A Review of Facts and Theories
Conclusion: CSF secretion and absorption are expected to take place throughout the entire brain ’s capillaries network under the regulation of hydrostatic and osmotic gradients. The unidirectional flow is defied, highlighting the possibility of its complete absence. The importance of AGs is brought into question, potentiating the significance of the lymphatic system as the primary site of re absorption. However, the definition of hydrocephalus and its treatment strategies remain strongly associated with the classical hypothesis.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

Effectiveness of Intensively Applied Mirror Therapy in Older Patients with Post-Stroke Hemiplegia: A Preliminary Trial
Conclusion: Intensive MT appears to be more effective than a more spaced over time therapy; therefore, at least in the older adults, this treatment protocol should be recommended in the post-stroke recovery of these patients. Further studies will confirm with certainty whether this treatment is the most suitable guideline for to treat these patients.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)
