“You Are Older, although You Do Not Know That”: Time, Consciousness, and Memory in “A Kind of Alaska” by Harold Pinter (1930–2008)
This article analyzes how Pinter’s drama investigated the mysterious and fascinating relationship between time, memory, and consciousness. The term “awakenings,” chosen by Sacks himself, clearly refers to the restoration of voluntary motor function in patients with postencephalitic parkinsonism who responded to levodopa. However, it also suggests that these patients had an impairment of awareness. Actually, beyond the acute phase, subjects with postencephal itic parkinsonism were not sleeping but severely akinetic and therefore probably aware of the passage of time. Oliver Sacks probably did not entirely recognize th...

The Effect of Water-Based Therapy Compared to Land-Based Therapy on Balance and Gait Parameters of Patients with Stroke: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Findings from meta-analysis support the effectiveness of land-based therapy in the improvement of balance and gait parameters of patients with stroke. However, the evidence for water-based therapy continues to be limited, and higher quality studies are required to determine the effectiveness of water-based therapy on patients with stroke, particularly on balance and gait.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)

On the Threshold of Scientific Medicine: Gerard van Swieten and His Perception of the Pathophysiology in Traumatic Brain Injury
Gerard van Swieten (1700 –1772), famous pupil of Professor Herman Boerhaave (1668–1738) of Leiden University and personal physician of Austrian Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa (1717–1780). Herman Boerhaave was a renowned Dutch physician inside and outside Europe in the 18th century. He was not only appointed professor in medicine, chemistry, and botany but also a chancellor of the Leiden University in 1714 and published his well-knownAphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis in 1709. Gerard van Swieten commented upon Boerhaave ’s aphorisms and demonstrated actual knowledge, less well-known among the medical commu...

Longitudinal Timed Up and Go Assessment in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Pilot Study
Progressive loss of walking ability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been scarcely studied as a potential predictive factor for survival in motor neuron disease. We aimed to assess the progression of gait decline and its association with mortality in ALS using the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). Patients were followed up prospectively at the Centre for ALS and Related Disorders in Geneva University Hospitals between 2012 and 2016. The TUG was performed at baseline and subsequent evaluations occurred every 3 months. At inclusion, patients were classified as unable to perform the TUG, “slow TUG” (#x3e;10.6 s), and ...

A Questionnaire-Based Study on Clinical REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and Subtypes in Multiple System Atrophy
Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of clinical RBD is unrelated to the subtypes of MSA. The onset of clinical RBD during the premotor period was not different between subtypes of MSA. However, we found that the severity of RBD occurring before the motor symptoms was more than that occurring after the motor symptoms in MSA-C patients. Our results showed that MSA-P and MSA-C patients may have a probable indicator for the similar pathologic mechanism of the disease and its sleep problems.Eur Neurol (Source: European Neurology)
